On the vocabulary of private correspondence in the first half of the 20th century

Abstract:

Práce se zapojuje do lingvistického výzkumu soukromé korespondence, který v Ústavu českého jazyka FF MU probíhá od 90. let 20. století. Jejím cílem je poukázat na využitelnost epistolárního materiálu pro výzkum dynamiky slovní zásoby češtiny ve 20. století. Práce se zaměřuje na postupné mizení lexikálních jednotek z úzu, sleduje též proměny stylové příznakovosti související s tímto procesem i s dobovým vnímáním spisovného jazyka. Opírá se o excerpci 155 soukromých dopisů (různých pisatelů) napsaných v první polovině 20. století. Jádrem je soubor 276 excerpovaných slov, která v dané formě a významu nezaznamenává SSČ, případně která SSČ charakterizuje kvalifikátorem poukazujícím na zastaralost (reflektován je i vztah mezi zastaráváním a knižností). Na základě konfrontace lexikografického záznamu ve třech výkladových slovnících češtiny 20. století (PSJČ, SSJČ, SSČ) je v práci zachycen průběh zastarávání sledovaných jednotek. Stav v dnešním úzu je doplňkově verifikován třígenerační anketou současných mluvčích. Práce má především materiálový charakter, přináší však i elementární zhodnocení zjištěných dat. V úvodní části podává též detailní charakteristiku dobové jazykové situace. Tím vším vytváří východisko pro další výzkum v dané oblasti, což bylo jejím hlavním úkolem.

Abstract:

The presented B. A. theses is a part of linguistic research of private correspondence that has been held at the Department of Czech Language of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University since 1990s. The aim of the thesis is to point out the possibility to use epistolary material for the research of the dynamism of Czech vocabulary in the 20th century. The theses focuses on the gradual disappearance of lexical items from common use, and also monitors changes in stylistic markednesss associated with this process and the current perception in the standard language. The work is based on excerpts of 155 private letters (by various writers), written in the first half of the 20th century. Its core is a set of 276 excerpted words that (in the given form and meaning) are not recorded in the dictionary “Slovník spisovné češtiny pro školu a veřejnost” or have a qualifier pointing to obsolescence (the relationship between obsolescence and bookishness is reflected in the work too). Based on confrontation of lexicographical records in three Czech monolingual dictionaries of 20th century (PSJČ, SSJČ, SSČ) the work captures the progress of obsolescence of the monitored units. Additionally, the stylistic perception of these words in today's use is verified by a three-generational survey among current speakers. Though the thesis is primarily material-based, it brings elementary evaluation of detected data. The introductory section also gives a detailed characterization of the contemporary language situation. The main aim of the theses is to become a basis for further research in the field.
