Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analýza ženských postav v kanadské literatuře 60. a 70. let 20. století, konkrétně v díle kanadské autorky Margaret Laurence, které zahrnuje pět knih spjatých s fiktivním prérijním maloměstem Manawaka: The Stone Angel (1964), A Jest of God (1966), The Fire-Dwellers (1969), A Bird in the House (1970) a The Diviners (1974). Teoretická část práce nabízí historický kontext a přibližuje sociální a kulturní prostředí kanadských prérií, v němž se analyzované romány odehrávají. Obsahem této části je také stručný přehled anglo-kanadské literatury s důrazem na roli žen - spisovatelek a nové perspektivy, které tyto autorky vnesly do žánru kanadského prérijního románu. Analytická část práce pak na základě uvedených děl Margaret Laurence představuje ideu kanadské identity a historické a kulturní faktory, které ji utvářely a ovlivňovaly. Analýza se zaměřuje především na ženské postavy, ale také na vztahy mezi různými národnostními skupinami osadníků a mezi osadníky a původním obyvatelstvem. V závěru práce je zdůrazněn přínos kanadské prérijní literatury k pochopení pluralitního kanadského kulturního dědictví, které velkou měrou přispělo k formování kanadské multietnické ženské identity.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to analyse the representation of female characters and their search for identity in Canadian Prairie fiction of the 1960s and 1970s, namely in Margaret Laurence’s Manawaka cycle which comprises five books: The Stone Angel (1964), A Jest of God (1966), The Fire-Dwellers (1969), A Bird in the House (1970) and The Diviners (1974). The first part of the thesis provides a brief historical context and defines the social and cultural milieu in which Canadian Prairie novels are set, as well as an overview of English-Canadian literature, with an emphasis on the role of women writers and different points of view they have brought to Prairie fiction. The objective of the analytical part of the thesis is to show the way to establishing a notion of female Anglo-Canadian identity as it was depicted in Laurence’s novels, in which she attempted to include the Métis characters as representatives of the marginalized Aboriginal population and bearers of their cultural heritage. The analysis focuses on women characters as well as relationships between various groups of settlers and between the settlers and the Métis to understand the pluralist Canadian heritage which has contributed to forming the sense of Canadian multi-ethnic feminine identity.
