Causes of the success of the Serbian Radical Party in period 2000 - 2008

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá příčinami volebního úspěchu Srbské radikální strany v letech 2000 – 2008. Hlavním cílem této práce je objasnit, které faktory přímo i nepřímo ovlivnily její růst. Text vychází z teoretických konceptů, které byly vytvořeny původně pro region západní Evropy a snaží se je aplikovat na srbský případ. Faktory jsou v podstatě rozděleny do dvou skupin: na faktory poptávky a nabídky. Především je zkoumán vliv nezaměstnanosti a přílivu uprchlíků, role etnických menšin a vliv specifické stranické soutěže na volební úspěch srbské radikální pravice. Práce dochází k závěru, že faktory ze strany poptávky vytvářejí úrodnou půdu pro průlom strany a ovlivňují její výsledek nepřímo. Naopak faktory ze strany nabídky vycházejí z vlastního charakteru strany a mají přímý vliv na její přetrvání.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the causes of the electoral success of the Serbian Radical Party in period 2000 – 2008. The main goal of this thesis is to clarify what kind of factors directly and indirectly influenced the rise of the party. The text goes from the theoretical concepts primary created for the West Europe and the main aim is to apply them to the serbian case. The factors are divided into two groups: demand side and supply side. First of all is examined the influence of the unemployment and wave of refugees, the role of the ethnic minorities and impact of very specific party competition on the electoral success of the Serbian Radical Right. The thesis leads to the conclusion that the demand side factors provide the perfect breeding ground for the electoral breakthrough, so their influence is just indirect. On the contrary the supply side factors come from the natural character of the party and leads directly to its persistance.
