Parental Conflict and Adaptation Problems in Children: the Meaning of Communication with a Child

Abstract:

Cílem práce je popsat různé komunikační strategie, které rodiče po konfliktu používají, a zjistit jejich souvislosti s potížemi internalizovaného a externalizovaného typu u dětí ve věku 9 až 12 let. Práce se skládá ze dvou na sebe navazujících studií. Cílem první studie bylo komplexně popsat různé rodičovské reakce vůči dítěti po konfliktu, potřeby a reakce dítěte. Data byla získána v rámci rozhovorů s focus groups, kterých se účastnili odborníci, pedagožky s vlastní rodičovskou zkušeností a děti. Pomocí tematické analýzy byl vytvořen model, který zohledňuje rodičovské motivy při pokonfliktové komunikaci (snahu o regulaci emočního stavu dítěte a snahu o regulaci emočního stavu rodiče). Druhá studie byla provedena na vzorku 92 dětí ve věku 9–12 let a jejich rodičích. Jejím cílem bylo vytvořit kategorizaci pokonfliktových komunikačních strategií a ověřit souvislost těchto kategorií s adaptačními potížemi dětí. Pro zjištění míry konfliktovosti v rodině byla použita metoda CPIC (The Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict), pro zjištění míry adaptačních metoda SDQ (The Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire). Komunikační strategie byly zjišťovány pomocí nově vyvinuté projektivní metody. Vytvořený model komunikačních strategií byl porovnán s dosavadními výzkumy, kdy se tento nový model jeví jako komplexnější. Kromě verbální komunikace v sobě obsahuje i prvky komunikace neverbální a zohledňuje doprovázející emoce. Bylo potvrzeno, že dívky i chlapci zažívají s vyšší mírou rodičovských konfliktů vyšší míru potíží internalizovaného a externalizovaného typu. Naopak jednotlivé komunikační strategie se neukázaly jako významný prediktor míry adaptačních potíží. Pouze u dívek se zjistilo, že použití komunikační strategie obsahující pozitivní emoce souvisí s nižší mírou potíží internalizovaného typu posuzovaných rodiči. Použití komunikační strategie obsahující negativní emoce zase souvisí s vyšší mírou potíží posuzovaných samotnými dívkami. Výsledky dále naznačují (alespoň u dívek), že pokud se rodiči daří adekvátně reagovat na konkrétní dětské potřeby, souvisí to s nižší mírou potíží internalizovaného a externalizovaného typu. V závěru práce jsou shrnuty možnosti aplikace dosavadních zjištění v klinické praxi.

Abstract:

The aim of the study is to describe communication strategies that are used by parents after their conflict and to find out association with maladaptation in children in age 9–12. This dissertation consists of two studies. The aim of the first one is to represent different parental reaction towards the child after the conflict, needs and reactions of the child. Focus groups with professionals, teachers with their own parental experience and with children were carried out. Thematic analysis was used to create a model that includes parental motives during after-conflict communication (regulation of child’s emotions, regulation of parent’s emotions). The second study was conducted with 92 children (9 – 12 years) and their parents. The aim was to create categorization of after-conflict communication strategies and to confirm their association with internalizing and externalizing problems in children. CPIC (The Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict) was used to measure parental conflict, SDQ (The Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire) to measure maladaptation. A new method that is based on projection was used to describe communication strategies. A new model of communication strategies was compared with previous researches. This model is more complex as it contains both verbal and nonverbal communication and includes emotions. Results suggest that both boys and girls have more internalizing and externalizing problems with more parental conflicts. On the other side, specific communication strategies weren’t significant predictors of maladaptation in children. Only using communication that contains positive emotions relates to lower level of internalizing problems in girls (assessed by parents). Communication that contains positive emotions relates to higher level of externalizing problems in girls (self-assessment). The results also suggest that the ability of parents to react appropriate towards child’s needs is related with lower level of adaptation problem in girls. The options of application in clinical practice are discussed at the end of this dissertation.
