McCarthyism: Modern American witch-hunt of the 1950'

Abstract:

Tématem práce je mccarthismus hon na čarodějnice v 50. letech 20. století. Práce nejdříve představuje zásadní historické události, které vedly až k stěžejním protikomunistickým opatřením ve Spojených státech amerických. Boj proti komunismu se odvíjí od ztráty Sovětského Ruska jako spojence a formování studené války. Od druhé poloviny 40. let vláda a její instituce silně podporují potírání komunistických myšlenek, každá strana pro to má své důvody, a vytvoří tím v zemi dojem, že je nutné se bránit rudé hrozbě. Americké veřejné mínění vidí v SSSR a jeho ideologii nebezpečí. Obrana vůči nim spočívá v pronásledování a vyšetřování podezřelých osob a organizací často bez ohledu na důkazy. Symbolem boje s podvratnou činností je republikánský senátor z Wisconsinu, Joseph McCarthy. Po něm je pojmenovaný vrchol honu mezi léty 1950 až 1954, pro tuto dobu se vžilo označení mccarthismus. McCarthy je demagog a oportunista využívající situace ve svůj kariérní prospěch. Miluje pozornost médií a dokáže bravurně manipulovat s hromadnými sdělovacími prostředky. Svými činy posiluje protikomunistické tendence Američanů a z mccarthismu se stává fenomén jedné éry, který po sobě zanechá mnoho obětí a negativních důsledků.

Abstract:

The topic of the this work is maccarthyism - the witchhunt in the 1950s. The thesis first introduces main historic events, which lead to crucial anticommunistic measures in the United States of America. The fight against communism is unfolding from the loss of Soviet Union as an ally and the beginning of the Cold war. Since the second half of the 1940s, the government and its institutions strongly support the combat of communistic thoughts. Each party has its own reason for that and it creates an impression of the necessary defense against the red threat. The American public opinion sees a danger is the SSSR and its ideology. The defence against it lies in persecution and investigation of suspect persons and organizations, often with no regards to proof. The symbol of the fight with the subversive activity is a republican senate member from Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy. The pinnacle of the hunt between years 1950 to 1954 is named after him, widely known as mccarthyism. McCarthy is an opportunistic demagogue, using the situation for his career benefit. He loves the attention of the media and manages to daringly manipulate the mass media. His actions strengthen the anti-communist tendencies of Americans and mccarthyism becomes the phenomenon of an era, that leaves behind numbers of victims and negative consequences.
