Differences in Internet Use: Secondary "Digital Divide" in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na problém sekundárního digital divide v České republice. Práce zkoumá rozdíly v používání internetu mezi jeho uživateli v závislosti na sociodemografických charakteristikách vzdělání, sociálního statusu, genderu a věku. V evidenci těchto nerovností vychází práce z dat české vlny mezinárodního kvantitativního šetření Světového projektu o internetu (World Internet Project) z roku 2008. V první části práce nastiňuje širší kontext sociologických teorií, které zdůrazňují roli informačních a komunikačních technologií v současných společnostech. Dále práce shrnuje historii konceptu digital divide, přičemž se zaměřuje zejména na multidimenzionální pojetí konceptu, které zdůrazňují právě rozdíly v používání internetu mezi jeho uživateli. Práce se zde opírá především o koncepty deepening divide Jana van Dijka a digital inequality, se kterým pracují DiMaggio a Hargittai. Výzkumná část práce vychází z analýzy proměnných, které zjišťují frekvenci provádění jednotlivých činností na internetu mezi jeho uživateli. Metoda faktorové analýzy rozlišuje pět dimenzí činností na internetu. Následná analýza porovnává průměrné hodnoty sumačních indexů jednotlivých faktorů v závislosti na zkoumaných sociodemografických charakteristikách. Tato analýza objevuje rozdíly u kategorií vzdělání, genderu a věku, u sociálního statusu nebyly objeveny téměř žádné rozdíly.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the problem of the secondary digital divide in the Czech Republic. It examines differences in Internet usage among its users, according to socio-demographic characteristics, such as level of education, social status, gender and age. The analysis is based on the data of Czech branch of World Internet Project, the international quantitative survey. The first part of the thesis introduces broader context of sociological theories, which emphasize the role of information and communication technologies in contemporary societies. The thesis summarizes history of the digital divide, focusing mostly on multidimensional understandings, which highlight differences in Internet usage among Internet users. The thesis refers especially to Van Dijk’s concept of “deepening divide” and DiMaggio and Hargittai’s concept of “digital inequality.” The analysis is based on variables, which express the frequencies of doing particular activities on the Internet among its users. Method of factor analysis extracts five dimensions of Internet activities. Subsequent analysis compares means of each factor, according to examined socio-demographic characteristics. The analysis explores differences in educational level, gender and age. Differences in social status were not found.
