Popularization of psychology – theory and praxis

Abstract:

V práci se zabývám tématem popularizace psychologie. Teoretická část je členěna do pěti kapitol. V první zařazuji svou práci do kontextu kritické psychologie, konkrétně pak do oblasti zkoumání psychologické/terapeutické kultury. Ve druhé upozorňuji na problematiku psychologizování, pop-psychologie a vztahu mezi psychologickým diskurzem a lidským trápením. Ve třetí kapitole rozpracovávám myšlenku, že psychologické vědění nezůstává v rukou psychologů, ale že cestuje z místa na místo a transformuje se. Ve čtvrté kapitole se zabývám proměnami zdrojů legitimity v současné společnosti a argumentoval jsem ve prospěch toho, že se tyto změny týkají i psychologie. V závěrečné kapitole obracím pozornost směrem k oboru Public Understanding of Science, který se zabývá právě tím, co je náplní popularizační práce – komunikací vědecké/odborné obce s veřejností. Za inspiraci považuji přístup propagovaný Lockem (1999) stojící v opozici vůči deficitnímu modelu, který staví na odeznívajících zdrojích legitimity tak, jak jsem o nich psal ve čtvrté kapitole. Empirická část představuje analýzu jedenácti rozhovorů s osmi autory popularizačních textů. Data byla analyzována pomocí metody tematické analýzy. První výzkumná otázka zněla: „K čemu může být popularizace dobrá z pohledu těch, kteří popularizaci píší?“ Z rozhovorů vyvstala tato témata a subtémata: Reprezentace psychologie (Utváření obrazu toho, co psychologie je; Zvyšování zájmu a důvěry), Osobní zisk autora (Popularizace jako marketing, Kognitivní obohacení), Článek jako pomoc (Skrze popis problému, Článek jako přímá pomoc). Druhou výzkumnou otázku „Co utváří dobrý popularizační text?“ pak reprezentují témata a subtémata: Propojení faktů se světem čtenáře, Zjednodušení, (Obsahu, Omezení odborných slov), Udržení odbornosti, Otevřenost. V závěru práce jsou tato témata diskutována s ohledem na teoretickou část práce.

Abstract:

The work is focused on the popularization of psychology. The theoretical part is divided into five chapters. In the first one I match my work with the context of critical psychology, specifically with the exploring of psychological/therapeutic culture. In the second one I point out the issue of psychologization, pop-psychology and the relationship between psychological discourse and human sorrows. In the third chapter, I elaborate on the idea that psychological knowledge does not remain in the hands of psychologists, but it travels from place to place and transforms itself. In the fourth chapter, I deal with transformations sources of legitimacy in contemporary society and I argue in favor of the changes concerned and psychology. In the final chapter, I turn my attention towards the field of Public Understanding of Science, which deals precisely ¨with the filling of popularizing works – with communication of scientific/professional community and the public. As an inspiration I suggest the approach promoted by Locke (1999) opposed to the deficit model that builds on the fading sources of legitimacy, as I have written about them in chapter four. The empirical part presents an analysis of 11 interviews with eight authors of popular science texts. Data are analyzed using the method of thematic analysis. The first research question was: "What can be popularization good to from the view of those who write about it?" The interviews raised these topics and subtopics: Representations of psychology (forming the image of what psychology is, increasing the interest and confidence), Personal author gain ( Popularization as marketing, cognitive enrichment), as Article as assistance (through the problem description, the article as direct assistance). The second research question, "What constitutes a good popularization text?" represents these topics and subtopics: Linking facts to the world of readers, Simplification, (content and limits of professional words), Expertise maintaining, Openness. In conclusion, these topics are discussed with respect to the theoretical part of this work.
