Forest health monitoring from satellite data with focus on bark beetle

Abstract:

Zdravotní stav lesa se zaměřením na kůrovce byl studován v oblasti jehličnatých lesů na Vysočině a v Jeseníkách pomocí družicových dat. Výzkum probíhal ze satelitních snímků z družice Sentinel-2A a Landsat 8 pomocí metod řízené klasifikace a výpočtu indexů NDVI a DI, díky kterým byly zjištěny poškozené a zdravé plochy jehličnatých lesů. Sledování pomocí časových řad od roku 2013 po rok 2019 umožnilo vidět značný posun od relativně zdravých lesů po silně zničené. V jesenických jehličnatých lesích bylo kvůli kůrovcové kalamitě v roce 2019 o 24 % méně zdravých lesů než v roce 2013, v jehličnatých lesích Vysočiny to bylo o 28 % méně. Dílčí částí práce bylo také sledování příčinných vlivů kalamity, jejíž největšími zdroji jsou snižující se vlhkost lesů, zvyšující se teploty vzduchu i povrchu a nevhodná druhová skladba lesů v ČR. Vliv vlhkosti byl zkoumán pomocí indexu NDMI a komponenty WETNESS, vliv teploty povrchu byl získán průměrnou měsíční teplotou povrchu z dat družice Terra spektrometrem MODIS. Družicové snímky Landsat 8 a Sentinel-2A i použité metody zpracování se ukázaly jako vhodný nástroj pro sledování kůrovcové kalamity v rámci zvoleného časového období.

Abstract:

Forest health with a focus on bark beetle was studied in coniferous forests in the region of Vysočina and Jeseníky using satellite data. The research was carried out from satellite images from the Sentinel-2A and Landsat 8 satellites using the methods of supervised classification and calculation of the NDVI and DI indices through which damaged and healthy areas of coniferous forests were found. Monitoring using time series from 2013 to 2019 made it possible to see a significant shift from relatively healthy forests to heavily destroyed ones. In 2019 due to the bark beetle calamity in the coniferous forests there were 24 % less healthy forests than in 2013. In the coniferous forests in the Vysočina region it was 28% less. Partial part of the thesis was also devoted to monitoring of the causal effects of the calamity, the largest source of which is the decreasing forest humidity, increasing air and surface temperatures and the unsuitable species composition of forests in the Czech Republic. The impact of humidity was investigated using the NDMI index and the WETNESS component, the effect of surface temperature was obtained by the average monthly surface temperature from Terra satellite data from a MODIS spectrometer. The Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2A satellite images as well as the processing methods as well proved to be a suitable tool for monitoring the bark beetle calamity over a selected time period.
