Mafia as a Cultural Phenomenon

Abstract:

This bachelor paper deals with the effect of organized crime on the masses and also tries to uncover whether the Mafia was correctly portrayed in the fictional works such as movies, shows and books. The paper will also answer why the criminals were depicted a certain way and if their representation in the popular culture was over romanticized. Paper is divided into three parts. The first part describes the history of the Mafia and its famous figures. The second part will at first describe the laws and traditions while the rest of this portion will focus on the figure of a gangster, its origin and the stereotypes connected with the genre of organized crime. The last part will center on the influences of the gangster genre and the way it was depicted in the popular culture. Third part will illustrate the difference between real life gangsters and their depictions on the big and small screen. Major motion pictures will also be described in this part.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá efektem organizovaného zločinu na lidi, a snaží se zjistit, zdali je Mafie správně zobrazována ve fiktivních dílech, například ve filmech, televizních seriálech a knihách. Tato práce také odpoví na otázku, proč byli zločinci zobrazováni určitým způsobem a jestli styl, kterým byli znázorňování je idealizoval či ne. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První část popisuje historii Mafie a následně bude pojednávat o nejznámějších gangsterech. Druhá část nejprve popíše zákony a hierarchii Mafie a poté postavu gangstera, její původ a zároveň různé stereotypy spojené s mafiánským žánrem. Poslední část zmíní nejznámější mafiánské filmy a následně se zaměří na vliv mafiánského žánru a na způsob jakým byli gangsteři zobrazování v kultuře. Třetí část také ukáže rozdíl mezi reálnými gangstery a jejích znázorněním ve filmech a seriálech.
