Identification and analysis of patterns in soil moisture and temperature dynamics in forest stands at detailed time scales

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na analýzu dynamiky půdní vlhkosti a teploty v lesních porostech buku, smrku a modřínu. Hlavním cílem bylo identifikovat a popsat vzorce oscilací půdní vlhkosti a teploty na podrobném časovém měřítku. Měření probíhala pomocí půdních mikroklimatických stanic TMS4 s podrobným časovým krokem měření po 15 minutách. Analýza dat ukázala, že pravidelné oscilace půdní vlhkosti byly přítomny v horní vrstvě půdy (topsoil, do 15 cm), zatímco ve spodních horizontech (subsoil, 15–29 cm) byly patrné jen minimálně. Oscilace se projevovali při dosažení nízké vlhkosti půdy. Průměrné mezní hodnoty půdní vlhkosti, při kterých docházelo k tvorbě oscilací, byly 35,3 % ± 2,52 pro buk, 21,7 % ± 1,53 pro smrk a 21,1 % ± 1,18 pro modřín v topsoil vrstvě. V hlubších horizontech byly oscilace zaznamenány pouze u buku s průměrnou vlhkostí 28,0 % ± 2,00, zatímco u smrku a modřínu se neprojevovaly. V období od června do poloviny října byla v topsoil vrstvě u všech lesních porostů zaznamenána silná pozitivní denní korelace mezi teplotou povrchu a vlhkostí půdy, pohybující se v rozmezí 0,8 až 0,95. Výjimkou byla období přibližně 48 hodin po srážkové události, kdy došlo k dočasnému poklesu korelace v rozmezí od 0,5 až -0,5. Laboratorní experiment potvrdil vztah mezi signálem a teplotou, při vystavení vybraných stanic TMS4 prostředí demineralizované vody s proměnlivou teplotou. Při zvýšení teploty vody o 13 °C došlo k nárůstu signálu průměrně o 50 jednotek i přes očekávaný pokles relativní permitivity prostředí. I přes to že se nepodařilo zcela vysvětlit jednoznačný zdroj oscilací půdní vlhkosti, tento výzkum přispívá k lepšímu pochopení dynamiky půdního mikroklimatu a má potenciál pro využití v lesním hospodářství a při adaptaci lesních ekosystémů na změnu klimatu.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on analysing the dynamics of soil moisture and temperature in forest stands of beech, spruce, and larch. The main objective was to identify and describe patterns of soil moisture and temperature oscillations at a detailed temporal scale. Measurements were conducted using TMS4 soil microclimatic stations with a high temporal resolution of 15-minute intervals. Data analysis revealed that regular soil moisture oscillations were present in the upper soil layer (topsoil, up to 15 cm), while they were minimal in the lower horizons (subsoil, 15–29 cm). These oscillations occurred when soil moisture reached low levels. The average threshold values of soil moisture at which oscillations formed were 35,3% ± 2,52 for beech, 21,7% ± 1,53 for spruce, and 21,1% ± 1,18 for larch in the topsoil layer. In deeper horizons, oscillations were recorded only in beech stands, with an average moisture content of 28,0% ± 2,00, whereas no oscillations were observed in spruce and larch. Between June and mid-October, a strong positive daily correlation (ranging from 0,8 to 0,95) was observed in the topsoil layer between surface temperature and soil moisture across all forest stands. The only exception occurred approximately 48 hours after a precipitation event, during which the correlation temporarily decreased to a range of 0,5 to -0,5. A laboratory experiment confirmed the relationship between the signal and temperature by exposing selected TMS4 stations to demineralized water with variable temperatures. When the water temperature increased by 13 °C, the signal increased by an average of 50 units, despite the expected decrease in the relative permittivity of the medium. Although the exact source of soil moisture oscillations could not be fully explained, this research contributes to a better understanding of soil microclimate dynamics and has potential applications in forestry and the adaptation of forest ecosystems to climate change.
