A comparison of active and passive investing in the US stock market

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je porovnání a analýza aktivní a pasivní investičních strategie v případě investování do fondů kolektivního investování se zaměřením na americké akcie. Konkrétně se jedná o komparaci aktivně řízených podílových fondů a pasivního ETF fondu kopírujícího index amerického akciového trhu S&P 500. Účel vzniku této práce je tedy zodpovědět otázku, zda je pro běžné investory výhodnější investovat do celého trhu amerických akcií prostřednictvím ETF, nebo zda je lepší volbou investice do některého z podílových fondů, který se trh snaží překonat. Teoretická část práce obsahuje vysvětlení pojmů aktivního a pasivního investování, dále se tato část zabývá definováním kolektivního investování, typologií fondů, nástroji pasivního investování a metody měření výkonnosti a rizikovosti investičních fondů. Praktická část se již zaměřuje na samotnou komparaci vybraných fondů z hlediska nákladovosti, výnosnosti a rizikovosti za pomocí metod popsaných v první části práce. Komparace byla provedena na základě historických dat z posledního desetiletí. V závěru jsou prezentovány výsledky z praktického výzkumu, na jejichž základě jsou stanovena doporučení pro investory.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to compare and analyze active and passive investment strategies in the case of investing in collective investment funds with a focus on US stocks. Specifically, it is a comparison of actively managed mutual funds and a passive ETF fund replicating the US S&P 500 stock market index. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to answer the question of whether it is more advantageous for ordinary investors to invest in the entire U.S. stock market through ETFs or whether investing in a mutual fund that attempts to outperform the market is a better choice. The theoretical part of the thesis contains an explanation of the concepts of active and passive investment, then this part deals with the definition of collective investment, typology of funds, instruments of passive investment and methods of measuring the performance and riskiness of investment funds. The practical part focuses on the actual comparison of selected funds in terms of cost, return and risk using the methods described in the first part of the thesis. The comparison was made on the basis of historical data from the last decade. Finally, the results of the practical research are presented, based on which recommendations for investors are made.
