Bilingual children at the age of 11 to 15 years, living in the Czech Republic, who learn English as their foreign language.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on the comparison of bilingual and monolingual learners aged 11 to 15 years while studying English. The theoretical part examines central ideas as well as limitations of learning theories that represent the acquisition of first and second language. Furthermore, the theoretical part defines the concept of bilingual learners and deals with the three most common types of bilinguals, the same as with bilingual brains. The work also investigates learning strategies and their role in the learning process. The research explores the differences between bilingual and monolingual learners in regards to their preferred learning strategies and self-views on success in learning English as a foreign language. The research data was collected with the help of a questionnaire, which partially confirmed the hypotheses formulated in the work. A total of 34 respondents took part in the survey, out of whom 17 were bilinguals and 17 were monolinguals.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na porovnání bilingvních a monolingvních žáků ve věku 11 až 15 let studujících anglický jazyk. Teoretická část zkoumá hlavní myšlenky a limity teorií učení prvního a druhého jazyka. Zabývá se třemi nejvíce uváděnými typy bilingvistů a rovněž jejich zapojením mozku při využití jazyka. Taktéž zkoumá strategie učení a jejich roli v samotném učebním procesu. Výzkum se zabývá rozdíly mezi bilingvními a monolingvními žáky, jejich preferovanými učebními strategiemi a sebehodnocením úspěšnosti ve studiu angličtiny jako cizího jazyka. Výzkumná data byla shromážděna pomocí dotazníku, který částečně potvrdil hypotézy formulované v diplomové práci. Průzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 34 respondentů, z toho 17 bilingvních a 17 monolingvních.
