Do we know the actual cost of having fun on the internet?

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje tématu zábavy na internetu, s ní spojenou energetickou náročností a dalšími environmentálními aspekty. Autorka si klade za cíl, co nejkomplexnějším způsobem přiblížit hlavní aktéry, zodpovědné za to, že můžeme surfovat na internetu, streamovat videa, poslouchat hudební obsah nebo trávit čas na sociálních sítích. V teoretické části jsou popisována místa, kde se nachází hmotná podoba internetu, stopován je proud dat od datových center až po uživatelská zařízení a hlavně je nahlíženo na nepřehlédnutelnou environmentální daň všeho výše zmíněného. V praktické části autorka vytváří infografiku pro studenty středních škol na téma "Víme, kolik nás opravdu stojí zábava na internetu?", kde na bázi teoretické části této práce předkládá zjištěné informace k dané problematice. Součástí je i segment, zaměřující se na možnosti jednotlivce v kontextu snížení environmentálního dopadu dané zábavy.

Abstract:

This work delves into the topic of entertainment on the internet, its associated energy demands, and other environmental aspects. The author aims to comprehensively approach the main actors responsible for enabling activities such as internet surfing, video streaming, music listening, or spending time on social media. In the theoretical part, locations housing the tangible infrastructure of the internet are described, tracing the flow of data from data centers to user devices, while notably shedding light on the undeniable environmental toll of all the aforementioned activities. In the practical section, the author crafts an infographic for high school students titled "Do We Really Know the True Cost of Internet Entertainment?" Based on the theoretical framework of this work, relevant findings regarding the issue are presented. Additionally, there is a segment focusing on actions of individuals to reduce their environmental impact in this context.
