Spatial distribution of vacant spaces in the capital city of Prague

Abstract:

Problematika prázdných míst je nejčastěji vnímána v kontextu starých průmyslových regionů. Předchozí výzkumy však ukázaly, že prázdná místa mohou vznikat jak ve smršťujících se městech, tak i v rostoucích, přičemž příčiny jejich vzniku mohou být ovlivněny odlišnými faktory. Výzkum bude zcela jisté ovlivněn epidemií COVID-19, především pak jejími účinky a dopady spojenými s dlouhodobým uzavřením nepřeberného množství ekonomických aktivit. Cílem této diplomové práce je tak nejen zmapovat prostorovou distribuci prázdných míst na území hlavního města Prahy, ale také identifikovat příčiny jejich vzniku, účinky a dopady jejich existence na sousedství včetně zhodnocení potenciálu jejich využití. V teoretické části budou blíže představeny příčiny vzniku prázdných míst, bariéry jejich obnovy a postupy pro hodnocení potenciálu jejich opětovného využití dle ekonomických, sociálních a ekologických hodnot. Hlavní metodou sběru dat je pasportizace a prostorová analýza v prostředí GIS. Dále bude využito případové studie závěrů práce z roku 2018 pojednávající o změnách fyzické, funkční a sociální prostorové struktury v oblasti výzkumu. Empirická část je tvořena shrnutím veškerých poznatků získaných v průběhu výzkumu. Práce je uzavřena vyhodnocením zjištěných poznatků a doporučením na základě zhodnocení výsledků výzkumu.

Abstract:

The issue of vacant spaces is most often seen in the context of old industrial regions. However, previous research has shown that vacant spaces can arise in shrinking cities as well as in growing cities, when the causes of vacancy can be influenced by different factors. The research will certainly be influenced by the COVID-19 epidemic, especially its effects and impacts associated with the long-term closure of a wealth of economic activities. Thus, the aim of this thesis is not only to map the spatial distribution of vacant spaces in the capital city, but also to attempt to identify the causes, effects and impacts of their existence on neighbourhoods, including an assessment of their potential for re-use. In the theoretical part, the causes of vacant spaces, barriers to their renewal and procedures for assessing their reuse potential according to economic, social and ecological values will be presented in more detail. The main method of data collection is passporting and spatial analysis in a GIS. In addition, a case study of the conclusions of the 2018 thesis will be used to discuss the changes in the physical, functional and social spatial structure in the research area. The empirical part consists of a summary of all the findings obtained during the research. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of the findings and recommendations based on the factual findings of the research.
