Life and Times of the Notion of Noéma

Abstract:

Diplomová práce bude věnována pojmu Noéma; jeho genezi, ustanovení a úloze, kterou sehrál ve filosofii 20. století. V první části práce nastíním kritiku pojmu noéma pocházející z díla analytického filosofa Michaela Dummetta, Origins of Analytical Philosophy. Pokusím se také poukázat na rozdílné pojetí noématu uvnitř fenomenologické tradice samotné. Ve druhé části práce budu popisovat vznik a vývoj tohoto pojmu ve fenomenologické filosofii Edmunda Husserla, tato část bude obsahovat analýzu kapitol spisu Logická zkoumání, z nichž je možné sestavit raný Husserlův nástin pojmu Noéma. Následně přejdu ke spisu Ideje k čisté fenomenologii a fenomenologické filosofii, s jehož pomocí lze ustanovit smysl pojmu Noéma, a tím ozřejmit jeho ústřední roli ve fenomenologické filosofii. V závěru práce by měla být také objasněna relevance Dummettovy kritiky.

Abstract:

My thesis is dealing with the concept Noema; its genesis, assignation and its role it played in the philosophy in the 20th century. In the first part of my work will outline the criticism of the concept of Noema, which has originated in the work of analytic philosopher Michael Dummett’s ‘Origins of Analytical Philosophy’. I will also try to point out the different conception of the Noema within phenomenological tradition itself. In the second part of the thesis, I will describe the formation and evolution of this concept in phenomenological philosophy of Edmund Husserl. This part will contain analysis of the chapters of the file Logical Investigations. It is possible to assemble early Husserl’s outline of the concept of Noema from these chapters. I will follow with the file Ideas Pertaining to a Pure Phenomenology and to a Phenomenological Philosophy. With the help of this file, it is possible to establish the meaning of the concept Noema. By these means I want to clarify its vital role in phenomenological philosophy. In conclusion, the relevance of the Dummett’s criticism will be shed light on.
