Ethics of euthanasia

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou eutanazie z etického hlediska, kdy je velký důraz kladen na dobrovolnou eutanazii. Její nedobrovolná forma není předmětem práce. Celá práce je vystavena na teoretickém konceptu, zda je eutanazie z morálního hlediska ospravedlnitelná či ne. Cílem bakalářské práce je tedy analýza eutanazie z etického hlediska a uvědomění si, že rozhodnutí o její morálnosti není tak jednoduché, jak se nám na první pohled může zdát. Na začátku vymezuji základní terminologii potřebnou k orientování se v této problematice a historický pohled na eutanazii, postupně přecházím do samotného oboru etiky, respektive bioetiky, zabývajícím se eutanazií. Následuje stěžejní část práce zaměřená na některé argumenty pro a proti podstoupení, provedení a legalizaci dobrovolné eutanazie. V další části popisuji příběhy dvou nekompetentních žen, jejichž rodinní příslušníci na základě jejich zdravotního stavu rozhodli o ukončení jejich života. V poslední kapitole představuji pojmy paliativní a hospicová péče, které lze chápat jako alternativu k eutanazii. Tím, že práce objektivně nahlíží na problematiku eutanazie, se nelze dobrat jednoznačného názoru a prohlásit o eutanazii, že je či není morálně ospravedlnitelná. Avšak přemýšlet o eutanazii jako o souboru protichůdných názorů je znamením toho, že již na ni pohlížíme stejným způsobem jako etika.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the problems of euthanasia from the ethical point of view with an emphasis on voluntary euthanasia. Its non-voluntary form is not a subject of this thesis. The whole work rests on a theoretical concept based on the morality or immorality of euthanasia. The aim of the thesis is to analyse euthanasia from the ethical point of view in order to show that the decision about its morality or immorality is not that simple. First of all, I define the basic terminology needed for the topic comprehension and I also provide an insight into the history of euthanasia. Then I slowly move into the ethical field itself i.e. bioethics that focuses on euthanasia. This is followed by the main part of thesis which deals with some pros and cons of undergoing, performing and legalizing voluntary euthanasia. The next part consists of stories about two incompetent women whose families, based on their daughter's health conditions, decided to end their lives. The last chapter introduces us to terms of palliative and hospice care both of which can be seen as an alternative to euthanasia. The thesis grasps euthanasia from the objective side and that is why we cannot achieve a definite conclusion whether euthanasia is or is not morally justifiable. However, to think of euthanasia as a set of contradictory opinions is a sign that we understand it the same way as ethics does.
