Presentation of the socially engaged art in the gallery space

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o způsobu vystavování umění, které nazýváme umění sociální intervence. První část práce se zaměřuje na směr umělecké tvorby v historické perspektivě a zabývá se vývojovými tendencemi. Seznamuje čtenáře s vývojem a aspekty konkrétní umělecké tvorby, kterou nazýváme public-art, site-specific art, nebo právě umění sociální intervence. Umění, které usiluje o narušení každodennosti a zapojení lidí žijících v určité rutině. Druhá část se pak věnuje případové studii práce Kateřiny Šedé a Jespera Alvaera, kteří se také věnují umění intervence. Pomocí případové studie a kapitoly, kde se zaměřím na dva různé způsoby reprezentace tvorby dvou českých uměleckých skupin, se budu snažit odpovědět na výzkumnou otázku, jaký způsob vystavování tohoto typu umění můžeme doposud v galeriích vidět, a za jakých podmínek dokáže výstava umělců sociální intervence přenést podstatu uměleckého díla. Cílem práce je tedy zmapovat metodu, jakým je umělecké dílo v galerijním prostředí předáváno, a jakým způsobem ho diváci mohou dále zpracovat.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis discusses the method of exhibiting art, which we call the art of social intervention. The first part of the thesis focuses on the direction of artistic creation in a historical perspective and deals with development tendencies. It introduces the reader to the development and aspects of specific artistic creation, which we call public-art, site-specific art, or the art of social intervention. Art that seeks to disrupt the everyday and involve people living in a certain routine. The second part is devoted to a case study of the work of Kateřina Šedá and Jesper Alvaer, who are also dedicated to the art of intervention. Using a case study and a chapter where I will focus on two different ways of representing the work of two Czech artistic groups, I will try to answer the research question, which way of exhibiting this type of art can still be seen in galleries, and under what conditions can an exhibition of artists convey social intervention the essence of a work of art. The aim of the work is therefore to map the method by which the artwork is presented in the gallery environment, and how the audience can further process it.
