Plague epidemic in Brno in the year 1679

Abstract:

Mor je často nazýván metlou lidstva, černou smrtí či božím trestem. Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o morové epidemii v Brně roku 1679. Nemoc, jež postihla nejen každodenní obyčeje obyvatel města Brna, ale i jejich život, zvyklosti a kulturu. Snahou této práce bude seznámení se samotným bacilem, jež onemocnění způsobuje, prevencí, léčbou a opatřeními, jejichž základní principy se neustále opakují, ať se jedná o infekční nemoci v dobách dávno minulých či nedávných. Sociální dějiny morové epidemie z roku 1679 jsou zkoumány prostřednictvím konfrontace dobových pramenů různého typu, včetně pramenů hmotné kultury, a to především z oblasti Brna a Moravy. Takto konfrontovaná výpověď uvedených pramenů dokládá skutečnost, která zasahovala nejenom do individuálních osudů nakažených, ale také výrazným způsobem ovlivňovala jak sociální vztahy, tak i např. oblast vzdělanosti či dobové náboženské mentality.

Abstract:

The plague is often called the scourge of mankind, the Black Death or divine punishment. This Bachelor's thesis discusses the plague epidemic in Brno in 1679. A disease that affected not only the daily habits of Brno inhabitants but also their life, customs and culture. The aim of this thesis will be to get familiarized with the bacteria itself causing the disease, prevention, treatment and taken measures, the basic principles of which are constantly repeated, whether dealing with infectious diseases in the past or in recent times. The social history of the plague epidemic of 1679 is explored through confronting contemporary sources of various types, including sources of material culture, in particular from the area of Brno and Moravia. Such confronted testimony of mentioned sources demonstrates a reality which not only interfered with individual fates of the infected people, but which in a significant way affected social relationships, as well as, for example, the field of education and erstwhile religious mentality.
