Foreign Language Anxiety Among Students of English and Literature and the Effect of Synchronous Classes

Tato práce se zabývá jazykovou úzkostí u studentů anglického jazyka a literatury v bakalářském programu na české univerzitě. Cílem této práce je zjistit, jaká je úroveň jazykové úzkosti u pokročilých studentů a jaké aspekty online vzdělávání, jmenovitě synchronní výuky, snižují anebo zhoršují jejich jazykovou úzkost a jak. Míra jazykové úzkosti u 65 respondentů byla poměrně vysoká a z jejich odpovědí na dvě otevřené otázky v dotazníku vyplývá, že jazykovou úzkost u těchto účastníků zhoršují technické problémy, absence komunity, nedostatek neverbální komunikace, nepříjemné pocity z mluvení přes počítač a skutečnost, že výuka je nahrávána. Prvky, které snížily jazykovou úzkost, byly možnost přístupu k online slovníkům, možnost předstírat technické potíže, pohodlí domova a pocit, že studenti nejsou během výuky pozorováni.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with foreign language anxiety among students of English and Literature in Bachelor’s program at a Czech university. The aim of this thesis was to measure the degree of foreign language anxiety among advanced learners an to discover which aspects of online learning, namely synchronous classes, reduce or worsen the anxiety and how. The degree of foreign language anxiety among the 65 respondents was moderately high and their answers to two open-ended questions in a questionnaire indicate that their anxiety is worsened due to the technological difficulties, absence of community, lack of non-verbal communication, discomfort of speaking through a device, and the fact that the classes are recorded. On the other hand, the elements which reduced FLA comprised an access to online dictionaries, the possibility to pretend technological issues, the comfort of one’s home and the feeling of being unobserved during online classes.
