Jin Yong's fictional world as a construct of Chinese identity

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá dílem spisovatele Zha Liangyonga 查良镛 (1924-), známého spíše pod pseudonymem Jin Yong 金庸, patrně vůbec nejčtenějšího moderního čínského spisovatele, autora literatury žánru wuxia 武侠. Konkrétně se práce zaměřuje na tři knihy – Kniha a meč (Shujian enchou lu 书剑恩仇录), Létající liška z Ledové hory (Xueshan feihu 雪山飞狐) a Jelen a trojnožka (Luding ji 鹿鼎记). Žánr wuxia byl tradične považován za zábavný žánr a literáty Májového hnutí byl proto opovrhován. V této práci vycházím z předpokladu, že Jin Yongův fikční svět v sobě skýtá mnohem více než jen zábavu a únik od reality. Cílem práce je proto vstoupit do Jin Yongova fikčního světa a za pomoci analýzy hlavních stavebních kamenů tohoto světa odkrýt jaký obraz Číny (čínské kultury, společnosti a místa jedince v ní) Jin Yong vytváří. Analýza se konkrétnĕ skládá z následujících částí, Hanové a nehanská etnika, ženské postavy a kulturní pokladnice. Celou analýzu začínám popisem místa konfucianismu v Jin Yongově světě. Vycházím zde z dvojice termínů wen 文(civilizace, kultura, písemnictví, civilní vláda) a wu 武 (bojové schopnosti, vláda za použití síly), kde wen značí základní hodnoty konfuciánů a wu naopak hodnoty hrdinů žánru wuxia. Tyto dvě hodnoty prostupují celý Jin Yongův svět. V průběhu analýzy se snažím přijít na to, jakým způsobem wen a wu v Jin Yongově světě fungují, v jakém vztahu vůči sobě stojí a jakou funkci obecně plní. V samotném závĕru bakalářské práce navrhuji hypotézu, jakým způsobem Jin Yong ve svých knihách buduje obraz Číny a čínské identity a jakým způsobem by na Jin Yongův svět mělo být nahlíženo, aby z něj člověk získal co nejvíce (v případě hrdinů románů wuxia se jedná o nepřekonatelné bojové schopnosti).

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is aimed at analysing of three novels written by Zha Liangyong 查良镛 (1924-), who is more known under his pen name Jin Yong 金庸. Jin Yong is author of novels of genre called wuxia and nowadays is perhaps the most popular modern Chinese writer. I focus on following books – The Book and the Sword (Shujian enchou lu 书剑恩仇录), Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain (Xueshan feihu 雪山飞狐) and The Deer and the Cauldron (Luding ji 鹿鼎记). Genre wuxia was traditionally considered to be a genre of entertainment that is why the writers of the May Fourth Movement despised it. This bachelor thesis is based on the assumption that Jin Young's fictional world provides much more than just entertainment and escape from reality. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to enter Jin Young's fictional world and through the analysis of the major elements of the world uncover what image of China (Chinese culture, society and the individual's place in it) Jin Yong creates. The analysis comprises of the following topics, Han and Non-han Ethnic, Female Characters and Chest of Culture. I start the analyses with description of the place of Confucianism in Jin Young's world. I come here with terms wen 文 (civilization, culture, literature, civil government) and wu 武 (combat skills, government based on physical power), where wen stands for the basic values of Confucian values and wu for basic values of heroes of the wuxia genre. Wen and wu pervade the entire Young's world. During the analysis I aim to figure out how wen and wu work together in Jin Young's world, what relation they stand to each other and what function in general they perform. At the very end of the thesis I propose a hypothesis what image of China and Chinese identity Jin Yong constructs in his novels and from what point of view his world should be seen so man can gain the most from it (concerning heroes of wuxia novels it means gaining superhuman combat skills).
