Impact of light pollution on hibernation of bats

Abstract:

Light pollution is an unwanted ecological phenomenon, which has been spreaded across the globe in last few years. It is described by increasing of an artificial light during the nighttime and it affects both terrestric and aquatic habitat. Artificial lighting installed in caves can affect caverniculous animals, especially bats and it can cause negative effects on their successfull hibernation. During my research I investigated an experiment of measuring light intensity in chosen caves and the results were displayed by the method of light maps (Javoříčská cave and Sloupsko-šošůvská cave). These two caves are used most for hibernation by bats and the aim was to find out some relation in between the light intensity and the hibernating animals. Moreover I compared the sights of hibernating bats in relation to the lightning during three seasons of hibernation in Kateřinská cave and Císařská cave. I run a statistic analysis for values of lightning intensity from the sites of hibernating bats and those I compared in between species, locations and seasons of hibernation. There was found only one significant difference in between deep hibernation season and the remaining two seasons of hibernation for specie R. hipposideros from Císařská cave (p < 0,05). On the other hand there was no significant difference in Kateřinská cave. Comparing all four localities I found a significant difference in between all caves apart from Kateřinská and Císařská cave. Comparing the most frequent species from chosen caves I realised, that the species hibernate during various mean values of light intensity - R. hipposideros(φ=8,92 lux), Myotis emarginatus (φ=0,72 lux) a Myotis myotis (φ=4,34 lux). The lowest values were measured for specie M. emarginatus, because of the site of hibernation (dark domes and rooms), whilst the highest mean value was calculated for R. hipposideros. The results confirm differences among species in tolerance of artifitial lightning. The most tolerant specie seems to be R. hipposideros following by M. myotis. Because all the species of bats in the Czech republic are protected, I would recommend to the management of caves accesible to public to extend the closure of caves during the critical season of hibernation (October – November and March – April).

Abstract:

Svetelné znečistenie patrí medzi moderné ekologicky nežiaduce javy, ktorý sa prejavuje zvýšenou intenzitou svetla v nočných hodinách s negatívnym dopadom na terestrickú i akvatickú faunu. Vďaka umelému osvetleniu nainštalovanému v jaskynných priestoroch môže mať dopad aj na hibernáciu netopierov. S použitím metódy svetelných máp v dvoch z troch zimujúcimi netopiermi najviac využívaných jaskýň v Českej republike (Javoříčské jeskyně a Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně) som mal za cieľ zistiť, či majú nejaké preferencie ohľadom výberu intenzity svetla pri hibernácii. V dvoch ďalších jaskyniach Moravského krasu (Kateřinská jeskyně a Císařská jeskyně) som porovnal polohu hibernujúcich zvierat v závislosti od svetla v troch hibernačných obdobiach (pre-hibernačné, hlboká hibernácia a post-hibernačné). Zo svetelných máp som extrahoval hodnoty intenzity osvetlenia v miestach hibernujúcich netopierov a tie som následne štatisticky analyzoval a porovnal medzidruhovo, medzi lokalitami aj medzi jednotlivými fázami hibernačného obdobia. Jediný štatisticky významný rozdiel medzi jednotlivými fázami hibernácie vykazovali netopiere druhu Rhinolophus hipposideros hibernujúce v Císařské jeskyni, a to medzi obdobím hlbokej hibernácie v porovnaní so zvyšnými obdobiami, teda pre-hibernačným a post-hibernačným. V Kateřinské jeskyni takýto štatisticky významný rozdiel preukázaný nebol. Pri porovnaní všetkých štyroch lokalít v období hlbokej hibernácie mi vyšli signifikantné štatistické rozdiely medzi všetkými jaskyňami navzájom, okrem Kateřinské a Císařské jeskyně. Pri medzidruhovom porovnaní netopierov vyšlo najavo, že najpočetnejšie druhy v cieľových jaskyniach hibernujú pri rozdielnych priemerných hodnotách svetelnej intentzity - R. hipposideros(φ=8,92 lux), Myotis emarginatus (φ=0,72 lux) a Myotis myotis (φ=4,34 lux). Najnižšie hodnoty z daných druhov vykazoval druh M. emarginatus, čo je spôsobené miestom hibernácie druhu v pozorovaných jaskyniach (tmavé dómy a priestory), naopak najvyššiu priemernú intenzitu osvetlenia vykazuje druh R. hipposideros. Z výsledkov vyplýva, že existujú rozdiely medzi jednotlivými druhmi netopierov v znášanlivosti umelého osvetlenia. Najtolerantnejším druhom voči umelému osvetleniu sa javí druh R. hipposideros nasledovaný druhom M. myotis. Vzhľadom na fakt, že všetky druhy netopierov sú na území Českej republiky zákonom chránené, odporúčal by som vedeniu verejnosti sprístupnených jaskýň zvážiť zmenu otváracej doby, to jest predĺžiť dobu ich uzavretia aj na kriticke obdobia hibernácie (október – november a marec – apríl).
