Econometric analysis of game value of Hearthstone cards

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou existující ceny a skutečné herní hodnoty karet karetní počítačové hry Hearthstone. Základem práce je aplikace dvou zvolených ekonometrických metod (metody nejmenších čtverců a metody uspořádané multinomické volby) na netradiční objekt. Ze hry je zvolen vzorek 105 karet s dvanácti vlastnostmi. Každé kartě je vyjádřen vztah mezi její cenou a sumou herních vlastností. Ekonometrickými metodami poté určíme hodnotu herních vlastností a celkovou hodnotu karet. Výpočty probíhají v programech gretl a EViews 8. Výsledky porovnáváme s několika předpoklady z pohledu hráče a se skutečnou cenou karet. Cílem je určit, zda jsou levné karty a populární třídní karty podle předpokladu podceněné, nebo jiné karty naopak přeceněné. Z výsledků obou analýz vyplývá, že podcenění levných karet není tak markantní, populární karty jsou skutečně podceněné a naopak drahá karta Pyroblast, jež prošla přeceněním (zdražením) v rámci herního vyvážení, odpovídá hodnotou původní verzi ceny. Obě metody jsou porovnány a v tomto případě je ze statistického hlediska za vhodnější zvolena metoda uspořádané multinomické volby.

Abstract:

Bachelor's thesis is focused on analysis of price and real game value of cards in online card game Hearthstone. Main point of the thesis is application of two selected econometric methods (Least Squares Method and Ordered Choice Model) on untraditional subject. Sample consists of 105 cards with twelve attributes. Every card's price is then formulated as a sum of all its attributes. We then use econometric methods to calculate value of attributes and total game value of every card. Calculations are done using gretl and EViews 8 software. The results are compared to assumptions made from the point-of-view of the player and to the price of the cards. The goal is to decide, whether or not cheap cards, popular class cards and other cards are underpriced/overpriced. Results of both methods show that cheap cards are not as underpriced as expected and that popular cards are really underpriced. Expensive card Pyroblast is compared to its previous state before the price of the card was increased because of the game balance and results show that the card's value is closer to price it used to have. Both methods are compared and in this instance, ordered choice model is decided from the statistic point of view as the superior and more suitable method.
