Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá komparativní analýzou dvou románů: Velký Gatsby spisovatele Francise Scotta Fitzgeralda a Ohňostroj marnosti spisovatele Toma Wolfa. Úvodní část zkoumá ideu amerického snu a její vývoj v průběhu americké historie. Pozornost je zvláště věnována materialistickému pojetí amerického snu, který je v obou románech vyobrazen se skepticismem. Práce také hodnotí společné charakteristické rysy obou desetiletí zejména, ekonomický růst, urbanismus a konzumerismus. Dále jsou srovnávány stylistické strategie obou autorů, které do velké míry ovlivňují podobu obou románů. Stěžejní částí práce je analýza Jaye Gatsbyho, hlavního protagonisty románu Velký Gatsby a Shermana McCoye, hlavního protagonisty románu Ohňostroj marnosti, a jejich vývoje, který odráží povahu amerického snu v obou románech.

Abstract:

This thesis provides a comparative analysis of two novels: Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities. In its introductory part, the thesis evaluates the original concept of the American dream and its evolution throughout American history. Special attention is paid to the materialistic concept of the American dream depicted sceptically in both novels. The thesis also examines some characteristic aspects of the 1920s and the 1980s, in particular, the similar features of economic growth, urbanism, and consumerism. In addition, the stylistic strategies of both novelists are outlined as they influence, to a great extent, the forms of the novels. The crucial part of the thesis is the analysis of the evolution of Jay Gatsby, the main character of The Great Gatsby, and Sherman McCoy, the main character of The Bonfire of the Vanities. It analyse their evolution within the novels as a reflection of the nature of the American dream in both novels.
