Disunited struggle for united Ireland: different ideological branches of the Irish armed struggle

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou odlišných ideologických proudů irského ozbrojeného boje. Za účelem komplexního porozumění danému tématu se první body práce zabývají historickým pozadím irsko-britského konfliktu, který počátkem dvacátého století eskaloval ve válku za nezávislost a ve zformování Irské republikánské armády (IRA). Neslučitelnost názorů na rozdělení ostrova pak vedla až k válce občanské, která se nejen v kontextu této práce stala klíčovým milníkem. Následující kapitola mapuje činnost IRA ve Svobodném irském státě s důrazem na ideologické proudy a aspekty, které ovlivňovaly její charakter. Počátkem třicátých let došlo v důsledku turbulencí na irské politické scéně ke vzniku organizace známé pod přezdívkou The Blueshirts, která nápadně připomínala tehdejší fašistická hnutí, a se kterou se IRA ocitla v konfliktu. Závěr práce se proto prostřednictvím předem stanovených hypotéz pokouší zodpovědět otázku, zdali jádrem tohoto sporu bylo ideologické vymezení obou organizací, či schizma přetrvávající od dob irské občanské války.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is dedicated to the issue of ideological strands in the Irish armed struggle. In order to provide a complex background, first chapter deals with the history of the Anglo-Irish conflict which consequently escalated into the Irish War of Independence and the creation of the Irish republican army (IRA). Because of the following partition of the island, the Irish Civil War broke out and became a key event not only in the context of this thesis. The following chapter describes the IRA in the Irish Free State and points out important ideological aspects which influenced its character. As a result of political turbulences, in early 1930's a new organisation known as The Blueshirts was formed. It noticeably resembled contemporary fascist movements and came into conflict with the IRA. Therefore by means of the hypotheses which were stated in advance, the conclusion part of this thesis tries to reveal the core of this conflict: whether it was mainly influenced by the incompatible ideological backgrounds, or by the schism caused by the Irish Civil War.
