The concept of art and the problems and issues of the artist in works by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Henrik Ibsen

Abstract:

The following thesis analyses the perception of art and the problems and issues associated with artists in the works of Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Henrik Ibsen. The analysis of the works of the two authors allows a comparison of their concepts of art. In this way the thesis attempts to ascertain which influences can be attributed to the similarities and differences of the two authors. An important aim of the thesis is therefore to understand the works of Ibsen and Hofmannsthal in their historical context of the development of literature and furthermore to contribute further understanding to the perception of art and the problems and issues associated with artists in the nineteenth century. At the foreground of the research is above all other things the relationship of art to life (or of life to art) in examples of artist characters in the works of Ibsen and Hofmannsthal. The investigation of the question of the value of art also outlines the views of the authors on many important aspects of human life such as intimate relationships, marriage, family and profession.

Abstract:

Dizertační práce zkoumá pojetí umění a problematiku umělce v díle Hugo von Hofmannsthala a Henrika Ibsena. Analýza děl obou autorů v dizertační práci umožňuje srovnání koncepce umění těchto dvou dramatiků. Cílem dizertační práce je vysvětlit, v čem spočívají rozdíly a shody pojetí umění u obou autorů a čím je lze vysvětlit. Práce si klade za cíl představit Ibsenovo a Hofmannsthalovo dílo v literárněhistorickém kontextu a přispět tak k vysvětlení koncepce umění a problematiky umělce v devatenáctém století. V popředí zájmu dizertační práce stojí především vztah umění k životu (resp. života k umění) znázorněný na příkladech literárních postav Ibsenových a Hofmannsthalových divadelních her. Zkoumání otázky významu umění v chápání obou autorů se dotýká i dalších důležitých oblastí lidského života jako např. vztahů mezi mužem a ženou, manželství, rodiny a povolání.
