The Naive and Innocent - The Role of Americans in Graham Greene's novels

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of anti-Americanism in Graham Greene’s novels. The study focuses on Greene’s political development in the 1950s, the 1960s and 1970s. Important features of Greene’s output are the ideas of involvement and disloyalty. Greene got to know American interventionist policy in the third world countries, such as Asia or Latin America. He started his political output by the novel “The Quiet American”. On the character of Alden Pyle showed imperceptiveness of the USA towards distinct cultures. In the 1970s Greene took interest in anti-American nationalist movements in Latin America. Greene pounced at the wrongful US policy that supported Latin American dictatorships. An example of critique of such a negative regime was the work “The Comedians”. The thesis also analyses Greene’s inclination to left-wing ideologies.
