Suetonius Tranquillus on the private lives of Roman emperors in the era of the principate

Abstract:

V posledních desetiletích můžeme v odborné literatuře sledovat podstatný vzrůst zájmu o dějiny principátu a částečně i každodenní kultury. Suetoniovy životopisy si proto v dnešní době získávají širokou popularitu. Cílem této práce je dodatečně prozkoumat Suetoniovu práci a poukázat na soukromý život římských císařů raného principátu. Zkoumanou problematiku jsem rozčlenil do tří bloků. První z nich je zaměřen na všechny aspekty vzdělání a výchovy budoucích císařů. Ohledně jejich kariéry, většinou vojenské, zmiňuji především události do nástupu na trůn, pozdější spíše jen letmo. Druhý blok je zaměřen na nejsoukromější otázky života ? vztahy v rodině, výběr partnerek (popř. partnerů) a sexuální praktiky v míře, již se Suetoniovi zdálo vhodné zaznamenat. Do posledního bloku jsem zařadil soukromé reálie vedlejšího významu, které ovšem mohou čtenáře často zaujmout nejvíce. Jedná se o oblast stravování, péče o tělo a vzhled, reálie císařských hostin a exkurz do uměleckých zájmů jednotlivých panovníků.

Abstract:

In last few decades we can notice in the expert-literature an importantly growing interest in the history of the principate and partially also in the history of everyday culture. Suetonius? biographies now therefore gain wide popularity. The aim of this work is to subsequently explore Suetonius? work and point out the private life of the Roman emperors of the early principate. I divided the examined problematic into three blocks. The first one is focused on all aspects of education and training of future emperors. Regarding to their careers, mostly military, I refer especially to the events taking place before seizing power, later events are mentioned only vaguely. The second block focuses on those most private issues of life - family relationships, the selection of partners and sexual practices in the extent Suetonius seemed appropriate to record. Into the last block I placed the private life realia of lesser importance, which, however, can most readers often find most interesting. It?s going about food, care of the body and appearance, imperial feasts and excursion to the art interests of individual rulers.
