The human body as a museum object

Abstract:

Human remains represent a specific type of museum collections. They are subjects to specific ethical principles as well as legislation. The thesis follows the development of existence and treatment of remains in museums history. The United States of America and Great Britain represent the most important example, followed by some European countries as a supplement. The Czechia and its legal and ethical forms represent the conclusion of this part of thesis and is followed by a European-inspired proposal for handling and treatment of human remains in our museums. The conclusion of the thesis is formed by a reflecting speculation of the relevance of the existence of human remains in museum collections, which follows the current interest in the direction of controversy and several ethical questions. The thesis itself represents one of the first insights into this topic in Czechia.

Abstract:

Ľudské pozostatky reprezentujú špecifický druh zbierok v múzeách. Podliehajú špecifickým etickým zásadám nakladania a rovnako aj legislatíve. Diplomová práca sa zaoberá vývojom názorov a legislatívnych opatrení vo vybraných krajinách s cieľom navrhnúť metodiku pre vypracovanie zásad prístupu k ľudským ostatkom v múzejných inštitúciách ČR. V súčasnosti je nakladanie s ľudskými pozostatkami podrobnejšie spracované v USA a Veľkej Británii, ktoré sa dlhodobejšie zaoberajú najmä etickými otázkami práce a prezentačnej činnosti. Dopĺňa ich niekoľko štátov západnej Európy a severu. Česká republika a jej súčasná situácia v právnom a etickom pohľade je záverom tejto časti práce a nadväzuje naň formulácia metodiky nakladania s ľudskými pozostatkami inšpirovaný Európou. Záver práce formuje úvahová časť relevantnosti jestvovania ľudských pozostatkov v zbierkach, ktoré sledujú súčasný záujem v smere kontroverzie a množstva etických otázok. Táto problematika reprezentuje jeden z prvých náhľadov v Českej republike.
