Biodegradation of selected polyesters and their blends in an anaerobic environment

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo sledování biologické rozložitelnosti biodegradabilních plastů v anaerobním prostředí se zaměřením na degradaci polyesterů poly-{$\varepsilon$}-kaprolaktonu (PCL) a poly-{$\beta$}-hydroxybutyrátu (PHB) a jejich modifikací. Anaerobní rozklad byl sledován na základě produkce methanu a CO2 metodou plynové chromatografie a stanovením TOC. V testech se projevila dobrá anaerobní degradace pro přírodní materiály, kterými byly polyester PHB (rozložen z 90%) a škrob Meritena 100 (rozklad ze 70%). U syntetického polyesteru PCL, který je ve vodě nerozpustný, byla zjištěna minimální schopnost biodegradace za anaerobních podmínek. U směných vzorků PCL se škrobem, PVA (polyvinylalkohol), glycerolem a stearinem se procentuální odstranění substrátu pohybovalo mezi 23-29%, u vzorků směsí PHB/PCL s různým zastoupením TAC (triallylcyanurát), t-BPB (t-butylperbenzoát) a triacetinem byl zjištěn anaerobní rozklad z 41-58% a pro vzorek PCL se škrobem, PHB, glycerolem a triacetinem byl anaerobní rozklad zaznamenám z 10%. Ze získaných výsledků anaerobního rozkladu směsných vzorků bylo zjištěno zvýšení jejich degradace při vyšším procentuálním zastoupení dobře anaerobně rozložitelných látek.

Abstract:

This work was focused on biological degradation of biodegradable plastics (the synthetic aliphatic polyester poly-{$\varepsilon$}-caprolactone (PCL) and poly-{$\beta$}-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and their mixed samples) in an anaerobic environment. Anaerobic degradation was based on determination of production of methan and carbon dioxide method by gas chromatography and TOC determination. Degrabilities of natural polyester PHB (decomposed from 90%) and natural starch Meritena 100 (decomposed from 70%) exhibited significant rate of degradation. Synthetic polyester PCL (insoluble) showed very low anaerobic microbial susceptibility. The degradation of blends of PCL, Meritena 100, PVA (polyvinylalcohol), glycerol and stearine was degradated from 23% to 29. Mixed samples containing different substitution of blend PHB/PCL with TAC (triallylcyanurate), t-BPB (t-butylperbenzoate) and triacetine were degradated of 41-58%. The film consisting of PCL, starch, glycerol, triacetine showed the biodegradation of 10%. There was demonstrated that the value of percentage of anaerobic degradation was proportionate to the representation of biodegradable components in the sample.
