Bounding Volume Hierarchies

Abstract:

Hierarchie obalových těles hrají důležitou roli v počítačové grafice, protože významně pomáhají urychlit výpočty (např. kolizní testy, ray tracing). V této práci mimo jiné popisuji, co jsou hierarchie obalových těles, vysvětluji některé související pojmy (např. heuristika, k-d strom) a uvádím, jaké techniky se dají použít při konstrukci hierarchie obalových těles. Mezi ty patří například volba obalového tělesa (AABB, OBB,...), způsob budování stromu (třeba shora dolů nebo vkládáním) a metoda rozdělení uzlu stromu. Dále zde popisuji testovací aplikaci, kterou jsem v rámci této práce implementoval. Jejím cílem bylo ukázat, jakým způsobem mohou být hierarchie obalových těles budovány.

Abstract:

Bounding volume hierarchies play an important role in computer graphics, because they significantly help to improve speed of calculations (e.g. collision tests, ray tracing). In this thesis I try to describe them, some related terms (e.g. heuristic, k-d tree) and techniques, that are used to build them. For example a selection of a bounding volume (AABB, OBB, ...), a way to construct a tree (top-down, insertion) and a technique for node splitting. I also describe a test application, that I implemented for this thesis. Its purpose was to show, how bounding volume hierarchies can be built.
