Baltic diminutives in genetic and area perspective

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá baltskými (litevskými, lotyšskými a v rámci možností staropruskými) deminutivy v konfrontaci s deminutivy okolních jazyků baltského prostoru, tj. s deminutivy polskými, ruskými, běloruskými (genetický kontext), německými a estonskými (areálový kontext). Srovnání je prováděno z pohledu morfologie derivačních sufixů a z pohledu jejich významu. Z toho také plyne základní struktura práce, její rozdělení na část morfologickou a sémantickou. Vzhledem k tomu, že baltská deminutiva nesou také význam „velké X“, jsou brány v úvahu i augmentativní přípony ostatních jazyků. Sémantická stránka je tedy zkoumána v celé její šíři v duchu pojetí tzv. evaluativní morfologie. Pro objasnění protikladných významů „malý“ a „velký“, které nesou baltská deminutiva, jsou brány v potaz další funkce těchto přípon, a to v kontextu kognitivní sémantiky a dynamické typologie. Oproti obecným významovým schématům se baltská deminutiva vymykají spojením s názvy samců oproti běžnějšímu přechylování feminin, méně zřetelnou kategorií názvů zvířecích mláďat a již zmíněnou augmentací. Z morfologického hlediska je široký materiál, který je možné zahrnout pod vyjádření evaluace, omezen na formy tvořené od substantiv.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on Baltic (Lithuanian, Latvian, and, where possible, Old Prussian) diminutives in confrontation with diminutives in other languages of the Baltic area, i.e. Polish, Russian, Belarussian (genetic context), German, and Estonian (territorial context). The comparison is based on the morphology of derivative suffixes and their importance. This also determines the basic structure of the thesis, dividing it into morphological and semantical part. Due to the fact that Baltic diminutives also bear the meaning of “big X”, augmentative prefixes of other languages are taken into consideration as well. The semantic characteristics is studied in its entirety under the concept of evaluative morphology. To explain the contradictory meanings of “small” and “big”, which Baltic diminutives bear, other functions of these suffixes are taken into account as well, in the context of cognitive semantics and dynamic typology. Compared to universal semantic schemes, Baltic diminutives stand out by their connection with the names of males as opposed to the more formation of feminine nouns, the less distinguished category of animal offspring names, and the mentioned augmentation. In the perspective of morphology, the broad material that can be categorized under evaluation, is limited to forms created upon substantives.
