Multiculturalism in the Czech repoublic

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem práce je možnost aplikace multikulturalismu v České republice. Důvodem k sepsání této práce je vzrůstající počet cizinců na území České republiky spolu s její proměnou z tranzitní země na zemi cílovou, což vede ke zvýšené potřebě tyto cizince integrovat do české společnosti. Jedním ze způsobů integrace je multikulturalismus. Ten je v poslední době terčem kritiky, která je z velké části reakcí na 11. září 2001 a události, které následovaly. Cílem práce není hodnotit, zda multikulturalismus selhal či nikoliv. Cílem práce je pokusit se zhodnotit, zda je koncept multikulturalismu, tak jak dnes funguje v Kanadě, Spojených státech amerických či Austrálii, aplikovatelný v České republice. Hlavní důraz je v práci kladen na historii utváření národních identit. V souvislosti s touto historií rozlišujeme dva typy národů – etnický a občanský. Závěrem práce je zjištění, že multikulturalismus, ve formě v jaké je aplikován ve výše uvedených státech, je dnes v českém prostředí nepředstavitelný. Důvodem je výrazná etnicita českého národa spolu s „proticizineckou“ interpretací české historie. Řešením je podle mého názoru integrace na principech Alexanderova etnického napojování. Tato varianta integrace má větší šanci uspět tváří v tvář etnickému sebepojetí českého národa a zároveň jej může připravit pro případnou pozdější aplikaci multikulturalismu. Pokud bychom chtěli zůstat u multikulturalismu, nabízí se koncept Leitkultur Bassama Tibiho. Ten, přestože od imigrantů požaduje přijetí základních principů přijímací společnosti, jim zároveň nechává prostor k rozvíjení své vlastní kultury.

Abstract:

The main topic of this thesis is the possibility of application of multiculturalism in the Czech Republic. The reason for writing about this problem is the growing number of foreigners in our country and the transformation of the Czech Republic from a country of transit to a target country. That’s why need of integration is increasing. One of the ways of integration is multiculturalism. It has recently been criticized, which is largely a reaction to 11 September 2001 and the events that followed. The aim of the thesis is not to evaluate whether multiculturalism works or not. The aim is to try to assess whether the concept of multiculturalism (as it now operates in Canada, the United States or Australia) is applicable in the Czech Republic. The thesis focuses on a history of the formation of national identities. In connection with this history, there are two types of nation – ethnic and civic. The conclusion of the thesis is the finding that multiculturalism - in the form in which it is applied in the above-mentioned states - is now in our country unimaginable. The reason why is a significant ethnicity of the Czech nation together with “anti-foreigners” interpretation of Czech history. The solution is, in my view, the integration based on the principles of ethnic joints described by Alexander. This way of integration is more likely to succeed with regard to ethnic self-conception of the Czech nation and it can also prepare the nation for possible future application of multiculturalism. If we wanted to stay with multiculturalism, there is a concept named Leitkultur described by Bassam Tibi. This concept requires the adoption of the host society principles for immigrants, while leaving them room to develop their own culture.
