The effect of personal communication on the results of FSE students

Abstract:

Úspěch vysokoškolských studentů je závislý na mnoha faktorech, například motivace či spokojenost. Studie zabývající se osobní komunikací mezi studenty a vyučujícími popisují většinou pozitivní vliv této komunikace na výsledky a úspěšnost studentů, ale nejedná se o jednoznačné závěry. Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, zda osobní e-mailová komunikace má vliv na výsledky studentů Fakulty sociálně ekonomické na Univerzitě Jana Evangelisty Purkyně v Ústí nad Labem. Osobní komunikaci představují v této práci e-mailové zprávy zasílané studentům za účelem zlepšit jejich výsledky a motivovat je. Primární data byla získána pomocí experimentu, který proběhl během letního semestru akademického roku 2021/22 na kurzu makroekonomie. Participanti byli náhodně rozděleni do dvou skupin - testovací a kontrolní. Stěžejní částí experimentu bylo postupné rozesílání e-mailů testovací skupině. Získaná data z experimentu byla vyhodnocena pomocí neparametrického dvouvýběrového testu - Mann Whitney U Testu. Pomocí tohoto statistického testu byly porovnány jednotlivé výsledky ze všech dílčích testů (bodové hodnocení) mezi kontrolní a testovací skupinou. Výsledky poukazují na to, že osobní komunikace neměla vliv na výsledky studentů Fakulty sociálně ekonomické. U studentek pravděpodobně zapříčila osobní komunikace zvýšenou účast na jednotlivých testech. Práce může být přínosná zejména pro Fakultu sociálně ekonomickou jako zpětná vazba.

Abstract:

The success of university students depends on many factors, for example motivation or satisfaction. Studies dealing with personal communication between students and teachers mostly describe the positive effect of this communication on the results and success of students, but these are not unambiguous conclusions. The aim of this work was to find out whether personal e-mail communication has an effect on the results of students of the Faculty of Social and Economic Studies at the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. In this work, personal communication is represented by e-mail messages sent to students in order to improve their results and motivate them. Primary data was obtained through an experiment that took place during the summer semester of the academic year 2021/22 in the macroeconomics course. The participants were randomly divided into two groups - test and control. A key part of the experiment was the gradual sending of e-mails to the test group. The data obtained from the experiment were evaluated using a non-parametric two-sample test - Mann Whitney U Test. This statistical test was used to compare individual results from all subtests (point evaluation) between the control and test groups. The results indicate that personal communication had no effect on the results of students of the Faculty of Social and Economic Studies. For female students, personal communication probably hindered increased participation in individual tests. The work can be particularly beneficial for the Faculty of Social and Economic studies as feedback.
