Depression in relation to hope, meaningfulness of life, generativity and religiosity: comparison of Czech and Maltese samples

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá depresí a jejím vztahem k naději, smysluplnosti života, generativitě a religiozitě. Vztahy mezi proměnnými jsou porovnávány u českého a maltského souboru. Práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat souvislosti mezi depresí, nadějí, smysluplností života, generativitou a religiozitou. Dále zjišťujeme, zda je některá ze zkoumaných proměnných prediktorem deprese a zda se od sebe liší český a maltský soubor v míře všech proměnných. Posledním cílem práce je prozkoumání rozdílů v míře deprese, prožívané naděje, smysluplnosti, generativity a religiozity u vybraných demografických proměnných (pohlaví, věk, rodinný stav a náboženství). V teoretické části uvádíme přehled relevantních poznatků, vztahujících se k jednotlivým proměnným. V empirické části předkládáme kvantitativní analýzu dat. Data byla získána v rámci mezinárodní studie Hope Barometer 2016. Výzkumu se účastnilo 178 osob z České republiky a 90 osob z Malty. Použitými výzkumnými nástroji jsou Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (Kroenke et al., 2009); Perceived hope Scale (Krafft, 2014); Meaning in Life Questionnaire (Steger et al., 2006); Sources of Meaning and Meaning in Life Questionnaire, subškála generativity (Schnell, 2009) a Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (Plante et al., 2002). Zjistili jsme středně silné negativní vztahy mezi mírou deprese, prožívané naděje a smysluplnosti u českého i maltského vzorku. Jako prediktor deprese nezávislý na ostatních proměnných jsme identifikovali u českého vzorku prožívanou naději, u vzorku maltského se jednalo o prožívanou naději, smysluplnost a generativitu. Dále jsme zjistili, že čeští respondenti udávali signifikantně vyšší míru prožívané naděje než respondenti maltští. Identifikovány byly také rozdíly v míře zkoumaných proměnných u jednotlivých demografických skupin.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with depression and its relationship to hope, meaningfulness of life, generativity and religiosity. Relationships between examined variables are compared in the Czech and Maltese sample. Thesis aims to explore the relation between depression, hope, meaningfulness of life, generativity and religiosity. Furthermore, we examine whether any of the variables of interest is a predictor of depression. With each variable we have also compared level of difference between Czech and Maltese sample. The final goal of this thesis is to explore the differences in the level of depression, perceived hope, meaningfulness, generativity and religiosity in selected demographic variables (gender, age, marital status and religion). In the theoretical part of the thesis we provide an overview of relevant knowledge related to each variable. In the empirical part we present quantitative data analysis. Data were obtained as part of an international study Hope Barometer 2016. The research included 178 persons from the Czech Republic and 90 persons from Malta. Applied research methods are Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (Kroenke et al., 2009); Perceived Hope Scale (Krafft, 2014); Meaning in Life Questionnaire (Steger et al., 2006); Sources of Meaning and Meaning in Life Questionnaire, generativity subscale (Schnell, 2009) and Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (Plante et al., 2002). We found moderate negative relationship between levels of depression, perceived hope and meaningfulness in the Czech and Maltese sample. As a predictor of depression, which is independent of other variables we identified perceived hope for the Czech sample; perceived hope, meaningfulness and generativity for the Maltese sample. Furthermore we found that the Czech respondents reported a significantly higher level of perceived hope than Maltese respondents. Differences were also identified in the examined variables for each demographic group.
