The effect of drought on the macroinvertebrate fauna of a small stream

Abstract:

Vývoj klimatu a důsledky nynějších a předpokládaných klimatických změn jsou předmětem intenzivního studia v mnoha vědních oborech a vzhledem k tomu je pochopitelný zájem o studium extrémních průtoků, především vysokých průtoků a vysýchání. Důsledkem rozkolísaného hydrologického režimu může dojít ke změnám společenstev toků, jejich taxonomické, ale především funkční struktury. V podmínkách střední Evropy není přirozené vysychání toků běžné, tento jev je mnohem běžnější např. na jihu Evropy, v Austrálii nebo na americkém kontinentě. Pro studium fenoménu vysychání byla vybrána lokalita na Gránickém potoce v Podyjí u Znojma. Byl proveden detailní výzkum důsledků vysychání pro různé složky makrozoobentosu, včetně studia driftu a hyporeálu. Vysychání je jednou z disturbancí, která výrazně ovlivňuje abiotické i biotické podmínky toků. Jeho vlivem dochází v toku ke kvalitativním i kvantitativním změnám akvatických společenstev. Na intermitentní lokalitě byly celkově nižší density makrozoobentosu než na pereniální. Celkové taxonomického složení společenstva se na intermitentní lokalitě výrazně neliší. Reakce vodních organismů na nepříznivé podmínky je druhově specifická. Naprostá většina vodních bezobratlých se při postupném vysychání stahuje do hlubokých tůní, které později také vysychají. Některé organismy mohou mít fyziologické predispozice umožňující přežití krátkodobé vyschnutí v substrátu toku (například pakomáři a nižší instary pošvatek). Další přežívají vyschnutí v klidovém stádiu nebo ve formě vajíček. Pokud nemají žádné predispozice k přežití, jsou nuceni si hledat si refugia, tj. nižší a vyšší části toku (drift a protiproudová migrace), které nevysychají, případně hyporeál toku. Míra ovlivnění akvatického společenstva závisí především na délce a intenzitě suché periody. Obnovení a stabilizace společenstva závisí na mnoha environmentálních faktorech, a proto může trvat různě dlouhou dobu. Ve sledovaném roce se společenstvo společenstvo obnovilo zhruba po čtyřech týdnech. V případě Gránického potoka dochází ke kolonizaci intermitentní lokality driftem z vyšších částí toku, protiproudovou migrací, migrací z hlubších vrstev substrátu i vzdušnou cestou. Taxocenóza jepic (Ephemeroptera) je na vysychavém toku výrazně chudší, vyskytují se zde pouze druhy, které jsou schopné dokončit svůj vývoj před vyschnutím a mají takové biologické nároky, které jim umožňují přežít.

Abstract:

Due to the fact that the development of the climate and the consequences of the present and the estimated climatic changes is the objective of extensive studies in many science branches, there is understandable interest in the study of extreme flows, particularly high flows and the drought. Changes in macroinvertebrate communities, their taxonomical and functional structure, can be caused by the effect of unstable hydrological regime. The natural drying up of streams is not common under conditions of Middle Europe; it is more typical for South Europe, Australia or for the American Continents. The study area on the Gránický brook in Podyjí near Znojmo was chosen for the study of this phenomenon. Detailed study of the drying up was done with consequences for the various parts of the macroinvertebrate community including the study of the drift and the hyporeal. The drying up is one of the disturbances that influences abiotic and biotic conditions in streams markedly. Due to the drought, the qualitative and the quantitative changes of aquatic communities in the stream occur. It was found out that there were lower densities of macroinvertebrates on the intermittent site than on the perennial site. Generally, the taxonomical structure of the community does not differ on the intermittent site markedly. The reaction of aquatic biota to the unfavourable conditions is specific. During the gradual drying up, majority of water invertebrates move to deep pools that also become dry gradually. Some of organisms may have physiological predisposition enabling to survive a short dry period in the stream bed (for example chironomids or lower instars of stoneflies). Others can survive the dry period in the dormant stadium or in the form of an egg. If they do not have any predisposition for survival, they will be pressed to look for refugia, i.e. lower and higher parts of the stream (the drift and the upstream migration) that do not get dry, or hyporeal of the stream. The influence of the macroinvertebrate community depends especially on the length and the intensity of the dry period. Recovery and stabilisation of the community depends on lots of environmental factors, therefore it can take various time. The community was restored after four weeks approximately in the year of sampling. In the case of the Gránický brook, there is a possible recolonization from the intermittent site by the drift from the upper part of the stream, by the upstream migration, by the migration from the deep bed sediments and also by aerial sources (compensation flight). Mayfly taxocene (Ephemeroptera) was markedly poorer on the intermittent stream; there are only species that are able to finish their life cycle before dry period and that have such biological traits enabling to survive them.
