The Aesthetics of Translation

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce Estetické problémy překladu se zabývá estetickými problémy v překladové praxi s využitím dvou vybraných povídek Edgara Allan Poea. Primárním zdrojem je kniha českého teoretika překladu Jiřího Levého Umění překladu (1963). Práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol. V první kapitole se autor věnuje obecným okolnostem kolem překladu. Definuje překlad, jeho obecnou teorii, ideální překlad a současnou překladatelskou metodiku. Součástí jsou také dějiny překladu. Druhá kapitola je věnována Edgaru Allanu Poeovi a jeho dílu. Dále jsou řešeny obě vybrané povídky a jejich překlad. Třetí kapitola se věnuje samotnému procesu překladu a jeho vztahu k původnímu dílu. Poslední kapitola se pak zabývá estetickými problémy překladu s ukázkami ve vybraných povídkách. Cílem práce je definice jednotlivých problémů a nalezení jejich konkrétních příkladů ve vybraných povídkách.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis The Aesthetics of translation deals with translation aesthetics in the two chosen short-stories of Edgar Allan Poe. The main source of this thesis is the book The Art of Translation (1963) by Czech translation theoretician Jiří Levý. The thesis contains of four parts. In the first part, author deals with translation in general. Author defines translation, general theory of translation, ideal translation and contemporary methodology of translation. There is also part about the history of translation. The second chapter is focussed on the life and work of Edgar Allan Poe. There are also summaries of both chosen short-stories and information about their translation. The third chapter deals with process of translation and its relation to original. The last chapter is focused on aesthetics of translation. It uses examples in the two short-stories. The central goal of the work is to define individual problems and to demonstrate their function in the chosen short-stories.
