Loneliness among people with disabilities

Abstract:

Tato kvalitativní studie zkoumala osamělost u lidí se zdravotním postižením, cílem této studie bylo porozumět prožitkům osamělosti. Pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s 8 respondenty ve věku 22-34 let byly zkoumány zkušenosti těchto lidí se zdravotním postižením s osamělostí, samotou, i obrannými mechanismy, které tito respondenti využívají při svém boji s osamělostí. Tematická analýza ukázala, že respondenti často osamělost zaměňovali se samotou, respektive být o samotě pro ně často znamenalo také cítit se osamělý. Jejich osamělost výrazně ovlivňovaly témata závislosti na druhých, možnosti trávení volného času, copingové strategie daného jedince či osobnost jedince jako taková. Tato zjištění přispívají k rozšíření poznatků v oblasti osamělosti u lidí se zdravotním postižením a poskytují možnost srovnání s předcházejícími poznatky v této oblasti, čímž vytvářejí podklady pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

This qualitative study explored loneliness among people with disabilities, the goal of this study was to understand experiences of loneliness. Using semi-structured interviews with 8 respondents aged 22-34 years, the experiences of loneliness, isolation, and the coping mechanisms used by these people with disabilities to cope with loneliness were explored. Thematic analysis revealed that respondents often conflated loneliness with isolation, or being isolated for them often also meant feeling aloneness. Their loneliness was strongly influenced by the themes of dependence on others, leisure options, the individual's coping strategies or the individual's personality. These findings add to the body of knowledge in the area of loneliness in people with disabilities and provide an opportunity for comparison with previous findings in this area, thus providing a foundation for further research.
