The Role of Translation in Teaching at Lower Secondary School

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na roli překladů ve výuce cizího jazyka. Hlavním cílem práce je zjistit, zda využití překladových cvičení v hodinách anglického jazyka žákům napomáhá k pochopení gramatických jevů. Teoretická část popisuje různé výukové metody a přístupy, jejich výhody, nevýhody, roli učitele a jak tyto metody pracují s mateřským jazykem a překladem. Teoretická část se také zabývá názory pro a proti využití mateřského jazyka a překladu ve výuce jazyků, a také doporučeními jak překlady a mateřský jazyk v hodinách využívat. Praktická část se zabývá přípravou, sběrem, analýzou a výsledky dat akčního výzkumu, ve kterém jsou srovnávány dvě třídy šestých ročníků. V jedné třídě jsou při výuce využívány překladová cvičení, v druhé nikoli.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the role of translation in foreign language teaching. The main purpose of the study is to find out whether the usage of translation activities, in English lessons at lower secondary school, helps pupils to acquire the grammatical rules or not. The theoretical part describes different teaching methods and approaches, their advantages and disadvantages, the role of teacher, and how these methods work with mother tongue and translation. It is also devoted to the arguments for and against mother tongue and translation use and to the recommendations of how to use translation and mother tongue in language classroom. The practical part deals with the preparation phase, data collection and analysis, and results of action research. In the action research there are two groups of 6th graders compared. One class is influenced by translation activities while the other is not.
