The Protagonist and the Society in Bildungsroman

Abstract:

The diploma thesis intends to analyze the Bildungsroman genre as it may be seen in several novels written in English. Not only will the genre itself be described and examined, but the manner in which the genre evolves in these works will also be the focus of my thesis. Novels under consideration for this examination are Dickens´ Great Expectations, Bronte´s Jane Eyre, Saul Bellow´s The Adventures of Augie March, and Sandra Cisneros´s The House on Mango Street. The evolution of the genre will be shown to involve the changes seen in the perspective of relationships between the protagonist and his or her environment or connection to society. It is assumed at the beginning that great differences are likely to be found in individuals growing up in the Victorian England of the 19th century and the American 20th century setting, especially in relation to questions of gender or ethnic origin. These differences will be explored in this thesis.

Abstract:

Záměrem této diplomové práce je provést analýzu žánru Bildungsroman, jak by mohl být vnímán v několika románech napsaných v anglickém jazyce. Nebude popsán a zkoumán jen samotný uvedený žánr, ale námětem práce bude také způsob, jak se tento žánr v daných dílech vyvíjí. V rámci zkoumání jsou zvažovány tyto romány Dickensovy Nadějné vyhlídky, Jana Eyrová Charlotte Brontëové, Dobrodružství Augieho Marche Saula Bellowa a Dům v ulici Mango Sandry Cisneros. Vývoj žánru bude představen jako zahrnující změny z pohledu vztahů mezi protagonistou/protagonistkou a jejich prostředím nebo vztahem ke společnosti. Již na začátku je předpokládáno, že budou pravděpodobně velké rozdíly nalezeny mezi jedinci vyrůstajícími ve Viktoriánské Anglii 19. století a situací Ameriky 20. století, zejména ve vztahu k otázkám pohlaví nebo etnického původu. Tyto rozdíly budou předmětem zkoumání v této diplomové práci.
