John Ruskin: Ornament in Victorian Design

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce „John Ruskin: Ornament ve viktoriánském designu“ se zabývá aspekty ornamentu 19. století v designu. Základní metodické a kritické východisko práce při tom tvoří teorie Johna Ruskina. První část práce stručně představuje viktoriánskou epochu a vymezuje zásadní milníky týkající se užitého umění, a to především zprůmyslnění jeho výroby. Druhá část práce analyzuje dobové estetické teorie ornamentu a užitého umění. Věnuje se zejména rozporu Ruskinovy přírodní teorie a obecně přijímané vědecko-umělecké praxe spočívající v abstrakci a stylizaci přírodních prvků. Cílem práce je přiblížení estetických názorů Johna Ruskina, a potažmo hnutí Arts and Crafts, na úlohu ornamentu v designu.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis "John Ruskin: Ornament in Victorian Design" deals with the aspects of 19th century ornament in design. The main methodological and critical clue is the theory of John Ruskin. The first part of the thesis briefly introduces the Victorian era and points out critical milestones related to decorative arts, especially the industrialization of its production. The second part of the thesis analyzes contemporary aesthetic theories of ornament and decorative arts. It is mainly devoted to the contradiction of Ruskin's natural theory and generally accepted scientific and artistic practice of abstraction and stylization of natural elements. The aim of the work is to approach the aesthetic ideas of John Ruskin (and the Arts and Crafts movement) about the role of ornament in design.
