Our Ideas about Them: Critical Discourse Analysis of Refugee Crisis in Daily SME

Abstract:

The submitted graduation thesis deals with the media representation of refugee crisis in Europe by Slovak daily SME. Our objective was to describe, analyze and interpret media image of refugee crisis and events, participants and relationships thematically close to it, as they were represented by daily SME. To achieve our aim we opted for critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough as a research method, which allows studying the selected media discourse in the context in which it was formed. First parts of this work focus on theoretical frameworks underpinning our research - particularly the theory of social construction and media construction of reality; as well as putting topic in broader context. Based on our analysis we can conclude that the discourse of refugee crisis represented by daily SME has been built primarily on the human rights attitude and empathy with the refugees. Authors of the articles included in the analysis took the opposite attitude towards image of Slovaks, describing them as xenophobic and ignorant nation and putting themselves into a position of moral authorities, which point society in the right direction. However, their rhetoric has shifted towards the end of the monitored period, being less refugee friendly as the crisis escalated, admitting that Europe’s help has its limits.

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá mediálnou reprezentáciou utečeneckej krízy v Európe v denníku SME. Cieľom práce bolo popísať, analyzovať a interpretovať mediálny obraz utečeneckej krízy, udalostí, aktérov a vzťahov súvisiacich s touto tematikou tak, ako ich konštruoval denník SME. K dosiahnutiu cieľa práce bola zvolená metóda kritickej diskurzívnej analýzy podľa Normana Fairclougha, ktorá umožňuje študovať diskurz zvoleného média v súvislostiach, v akých bol formovaný. Úvodné časti práce sú venované teoretickým východiskám, predovšetkým teórii sociálne a mediálne konštruovanej reality, z ktorých v práci vychádzame; rovnako ako zasadeniu témy do výskumného kontextu. Na základe samotnej analýzy môžeme konštatovať, že diskurz utečeneckej krízy vytváraný denníkom SME bol postavený primárne na ľudsko-právnom postoji a empatii s utečencami. Autori v textoch zastávali protikladný postoj k nimi vytváranému obrazu Slovákov, ako xenofóbneho a ľahostajného národa a samých seba stavajúc do pozície morálneho kompasu, ktorý spoločnosti ukáže správny smer. Počas nami sledovaného obdobia však tento postoj, pod vplyvom vývoja udalostí, korigujú zjemnením proutečeneckej rétoriky a pripustením limitov pomoci zo strany Európy.
