International Professional Migration of Nurses and its Cultural Aspects, case study: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:

Ve své práci se zabývám profesní migrací českých zdravotních sester do Království Saudské Arábie. V úvodu práce charakterizuji teorie migrace, které spolu s dalšími kapitolami a subkapitolami, věnovanými současným světovým trendům migrace zdravotních sester, Království Saudské Arábie, zdravotnictví v České republice a v Království Saudské Arábie, představují východiska pro samotný výzkum, prezentovaný v kapitole 5. Cílem výzkumu, jenž je stěžejní částí práce, je objasnit motivace, které vedou české zdravotní sestry k migraci do Království Saudské Arábie, jejich představy o této zemi a očekávání s ní spojená. Dále zkoumám, zda se po roce pracovního pobytu v Království Saudské Arábie jejich očekávání naplnila a zda se chystají v této zemi dlouhodobě žít a pracovat. Na základě výsledků výzkumu usuzuji, že české zdravotní sestry nemohou v Království Saudské Arábie dlouhodobě žít a pracovat, což může být způsobeno především velkou odlišností tamější kultury. V závěru práce stručně charakterizuji interkulturní trénink, jenž by mohl českým zdravotním sestrám pomoci při jejich adaptaci na, z českého pohledu, velmi specifické prostředí.

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the professional migration of Czech nurses to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In the beginning I characterize migration theories that together with other chapters about the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, healthcare systems of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Czech Republic create basis for the research that is presented in chapter 5. Objectives of the research, which is the crucial part of the thesis, are to reveal motivations of the Czech nurses that lead to migration to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, their imaginations and expectations bounded with work and life in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Also I would like to find out if the expectations were met and if they want to work and live in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on a longterm basis. Based on the results of the research, I conclude that Czech nurses do not want to stay in such country on a longterm basis especially due to big cultural differences between Saudi Arabian and Czech culture. At the end of the thesis I briefly characterize intercultural training that could help Czech nurses with their adaptation to Saudi Arabian culture.
