Complex Conservation Treatment of a Book of Preachings from 1724

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zrestaurování starého tisku Kázanj na swátečnj ewangelia a o vmučenj páně z roku 1724, který je uložen v Ústřední knihovně Filosofické fakulty Masarykovy Univerzity v Brně. Kniha má celousňovou barokní vazbu s lepenkovými deskami a dobovou usňovou vysprávkou v oblasti hřbetu. Kvůli upadnuté přední desce a působení vnějších činitelů došlo k výraznému poškození celé knihy, tudíž byl nutný komplexní restaurátorský zásah. Textová část této práce zahrnuje podrobnou dokumentaci postupu restaurování (jak písemnou, tak i fotografickou), popis typologie knihy a jejího poškození aj. Veškerý text je doplněn o sérii příloh různého charakteru, např. nákresy, tabulky, schémata. V rámci psané části byl zařazen i krátký historický exkurz do provenience knihy. Na základě přípisků a razítek totiž byli nalezeni někteří z předchozích majitelů knihy.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is the restoration of an old print called the Book of Sermons on Holiday Evangels and Sermons about the Martyrdom of our Lord from 1724. The book belongs to the Masaryk University in Brno, to the Central Library at the Faculty of Arts. The object of interest has a full-leather baroque bookbinding with cardboard boards. There is a stripe of different leather that covers the spine. Because of the half separated front board and due to the bad environment the book was in, its condition wasn't good. Therefore, it was decided to do a complex restoration intervention. The text part includes a detailed documentation of the restoration approach (both written, same as photographic), the description of the book condition and its typology etc. There is also a part with different appendices that should help with understanding the written text. There are e.g. schemes, tables or designs. Beside the chapters about the restoration process there is also one dedicated completely to the provenance of the book. Thanks to the stamps and the writings discovered on the endpapers, it was possible to find some of the previous owners.
