Czech Orientalism: Imaginations of Korea in Nošovice and its surroundings

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá imaginacemi o korejské kultuře po příchodu firmy Hyundai do podhorské oblasti Nošovic v Moravskoslezském kraji. Palestinský profesor Edward Said se proslavil díky knize Orientalismus, která se stala překládanou po celém světě. Ve svém díle Said studoval roli představ o Orientu a Západu, v průběhu doby koloniální a post ? koloniální, a utvářením si názorů na ty ?druhé?. Vesnice Nošovice se musela vypořádat s příchodem korejského zahraničního investora Hyundai do své lokality. Celá situace přinesla pro místní obyvatele mnoho změn a zásahů, se kterými se museli vyrovnat a naučit se s nimi ţít. Díky těmto vjemům si lidé mohli vytvořit imaginace o zcela odlišné korejské kultuře a zároveň také o nové firmě. Celá situace příchodu firmy je sledovaná širokou veřejností. Cílem práce je prozkoumat imaginace o korejské společnosti a posoudit, do jaké míry naplňují kritéria Edwarda Saida, a zároveň zváţit, jaký mají dopad na interakce mezi občany. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou a praktickou. Teoretické část se zabývá Saidovou studií a vzešlou kritikou na jeho dílo. Praktická část obsahuje rozbory rozhovorů a jejich následné vyhodnocení.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with imaginations of Korean culture after the arrival of the Hyundai Company to the foothills of the Moravian-Silesian County. Palestinian professor Edward Said became famous thanks to his book Orientalism which had been translated all over the world. In his work, Said studied the role of images of the Orient and the West during the colonial and post-colonial period. He also studied the creation of opinions about ?the Others?. The village of Nošovice had to deal with the arrival of the Korean investor Hyundai into its locality. The situation meant a lot of changes and interventions. The people had to learn to live with these factors. Thanks to these perceptions the people were able to create images of a different Korean culture and also of a new company. The whole situation concerning the arrival of the company is being watched carefully by the general public. The aim of this work is to go through the images of the Korean public and to consider to what measure they fulfill the Edward Said´s criteria and at the same time to consider what impact they have on the interactions among the citizens. The work is divided into two parts ? theoretical and practical. The theoretical part deals with the Said´s theory and the subsequent critic of his work. The practical part contains analyses of the interviews and subsequent interpretation of them.
