Analysing Gym Talk: characteristics of fitness jargon and slang

Abstract:

ABSTRACT This thesis is aimed at analysing jargon and slang in written communication between users of fitness website forums. In particular, the thesis focuses on the occurrence and specifics of jargon and slang terminology dealing with fitness and bodybuilding issues in line with a healthy life style. The main goal of the theoretical part of this thesis is to acquaint the reader with concepts and basic features of jargon, focusing on their characteristics from the point of view sociolinguistics, semantics and also word - formation processes. Furthermore, the theoretical part also introduces Internet terminology and the linguistic characteristics of website forums, as the practical part is based on selected posts from the fitness forums. In the practical part, the users´ posts from the discussion forums of fitness websites, are analysed. The aim of this thesis is therefore to examine the occurrence of jargon and slang terms from the forums of selected websites: attention is especially paid to their detailed analysis, which is based on word formation processes, semantic criteria, and word origin. Based on the analysis, terms with the most frequent occurrence in forums among users of fitness websites are also clarified and explained.

ABSTRAKT Tato práce je zaměřena na analýzu žargonu a slangu v psané komunikaci mezi uživateli fór fitnessových internetových stránek. Konkrétně se pokusí vysledovat výskyt a specifika žargonu a slangu v terminologii zabývající se problematikou fitness, posilování a zdravého životního stylu. Hlavním cílem teoretické části práce je seznámení široké veřejnosti s pojmy a základními rysy žargonu se zaměřením na jejich charakteristiky z pohledu sociolingvistiky, sémantiky a také slovotvorby. Dále teoretická část seznamuje s internetovou terminologií a jazykovou charakteristikou internetových fór, neboť praktická část je založena na vybraných příspěvcích z fitnessových fór. V praktické části jsou analýze podrobeny příspěvky uživatelů z diskuzních fór níže uvedené webové stránky. Cílem této práce je tedy zjistit četnost výskytu žargonu a slangu s jejich detailním rozborem, zaměřeným na slovotvorbu a sémantické procesy. Na základě této analýzy jsou také vysvětleny pojmy, které se nejčastěji vyskytují ve fórech mezi uživateli internetových stránek věnujících se problematice fitness a posilování.
