Migrants in the News Coverage of MF Dnes: Media Framing And It's Change in Time of Economic Crisis

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá mediálními rámci užívanými ve zpravodajství o cizincích v deníku Mladá fronta Dnes v čase ekonomické krize, a tedy v letech 2007, 2009 a 2011. V obsahové analýze souboru 546 článků jsme za pomoci metody klastrové analýzy konstruovali šest mediálních rámců: „Cizinci jako oběti, škodí jim Češi“; „Cizinci jako zátěž, jsou nežádoucí“; „Cizinci jako přínos, ekonomicky i demograficky“; „Stát trestá cizince, po právu“; „Cizinci jako kriminálníci, škodí občanům“; „Stát podporuje cizince, mohou tu zůstat“. Zjistili jsme, že v čase ekonomické krize se mění především dva z nich: klesá vnímání cizinců jako přínosu a sílí vnímání cizinců jako zátěže. Protože se nepotvrdil předpoklad ze západní Evropy o postupné kriminalizaci migrantů, zjistili jsme, že zatímco v západní Evropě byly restriktivní imigrační politiky legitimizovány na principech logiky strachu, v Česku se o cizincích uvažuje podle utilitární logiky zisku. Změna mediálních rámců v čase ekonomické krize navíc odhalila jejich flexibilní a situační povahu. Dále jsme poukázali na to, že trvalé charakteristiky mediálního obrazu cizinců odpovídají principům mediální logiky. Rutiny mediální organizace vedou k silné negativitě článků o cizincích, vysvětlují vyšší důležitost přikládanou článkům o blízkých a elitních národech i časté zastoupení oficiálních státních a policejních zdrojů na úkor cizinců. Tyto znaky se v roce 2009 ještě vyostřily, a to jako důsledek snahy mediální organizace ušetřit a získat čtenáře.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with media framing of migrants in the news coverage of the Mladá fronta Dnes newspapers in the time of economic crisis (during 2007, 2009 and 2011). In the content analysis of 546 articles, six following media frames were constructed using the method of cluster analysis: “Migrants as victims, harmed by the Czechs”; “Migrants as an unwelcome burden”; “Migrants as contributors to society, both in the economic and demographic sense”; “Migrants disciplined by the state”; “Migrants as criminals, threat to citizens”; “Migrants allowed to stay, supported by the state”. We found two frames changing in the time of economic crisis: the perception of migrants as contributors drops while the frame “migrants as an unwelcome burden” becomes more frequent. Criminalization of migrants, the premise from Western Europe, was not confirmed. Thus we found out that while in Western Europe the restrictive policy is legitimized on the principles of logic of fear, in the Czech Republic the logic of profit takes place. A flexible and situational nature of the media frames was revealed by this change. Furthermore, we pointed out that the stable characteristics of the media representation of migrants correspond to the principles of media logic. The routines of media organization lead to prevalent negativity among the articles. Through them, we can explain higher relevance given to articles about elite nations and also we can understand the higher representation of official state actors among sources. These attributes are even stronger in 2009, being most probably the effect of media organization seeking for more audiences and saving money in the time of economic crisis.
