The Western Wall in Jerusalem

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vnímáním Západní zdi v Jeruzalémě. Jsou v ní přestaveny dějiny, symbolika a současná úloha svatého místa judaismu. Uvedeny jsou zdroje, ze kterých je význam tohoto místa vyvozován, jeho vnímání během středověku a raného novověku až po současný stav. Stručně jsou představena období, ve kterých stál První a Druhý jeruzalémský chrám. Od roku 70 n. l. jsou pojednány časové úseky, během kterých se správa Západní zdi a Jeruzaléma přesouvala postupně od Římanů k muslimům a Osmanům, včetně přihlédnutí ke krátkému období křižáckých výprav během středověku. Studie se dále zabývá vnímáním Západní zdi během rodícího se sionistického hnutí. V následující kapitole je zachycena přítomnost Velké Británie v oblasti a vytvoření Britského mandátu Palestina, během kterého docházelo k vytváření precedencí souvisejících se Západní zdi, z nichž mnohé dodnes přetrvávají. Dále je sledováno období od vzniku samostatného izraelského státu a především události spojené s klíčovým rokem 1967, během kterého židovský stát dobyl Staré město v Jeruzalémě a Západní zeď se tak stala jeho součástí. Od tohoto přelomového roku je reflektován bouřlivý vývoj, během kterého se Západní zeď stala jedním z ústředních témat v Izraeli a na jehož formování měly vliv rozličné skupiny obyvatelstva. Specifické zvyklosti a rituály, které bývají s návštěvou svatého místa spojeny, jsou pojednány v kontextu svátků a dalších zvláštních příležitostí, během kterých místa využívají příslušníci Izraelských obranných sil nebo vysocí státní představitelé. Rozebrán je způsob správy a řízení svatého místa s ohledem na současné roztržky mezi organizací Western Wall Heritage Foundation a reformním židovským hnutím Women of the Wall. Rovněž jsou představeny události spojené se Západní zdí, které rezonovaly uvnitř nejvyšší izraelské politiky. V souvislosti s nejnovějšími událostmi jsou rozebrány změny, které nastaly po zvolení Donalda Trumpa americkým prezidentem a angažování jeho administrativy v řešení izraelsko-palestinského konfliktu, kam problémy týkající se Západní zdi rovněž spadají. Většina textu se zabývá historií uplynulých dvou staletí. Během tohoto období místo prodělalo řadu změn a získalo tolik nových konotací, že jejich množství jen stěží může soupeřit s některými předešlými obdobími.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the perception of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. It presents the history, symbolism and contemporary role of the holy site of Judaism. The sources from which the significance of this place is derived, its perception during the Middle Ages and the early modern period up to the present state, are presented. The periods in which the First and Second Temple of Jerusalem stood, are briefly presented. Since 70 AD, the periods of time during which the administration of the Western Wall and Jerusalem have gradually shifted from the Romans to the Muslims and the Ottomans, including the brief period of the crusades during the Middle Ages, are discussed. The thesis also deals with the perception of the Western Wall during the nascent Zionist movement. The following chapter captures the presence of Great Britain in the area and the creation of the British Mandate of Palestine, during which precedents have been created in relation to the Western Wall, many of them remain to this day. Furthermore, the period since the establishment of an independent Israeli state and especially the events related to the key year of 1967, during which the Jewish state conquered the Old City in Jerusalem and the Western Wall became part of it, is followed. Since this breakthrough year, a turbulent development has been reflected, during which the Western Wall has become one of the central themes in Israel and its formation has been influenced by various population groups. The specific customs and rituals that are associated with visiting this holy place are dealt with in the context of holidays and other special occasions in which the Israeli Defense Forces or senior officials use the place. It discusses the way of administering and managing the holy place with regard to the current divisions between the Western Wall Heritage Foundation and the reformist Jewish movement Women of the Wall. The Western Wall events that resonated within Israel's highest politics are also presented. In connection with the latest events, the changes that occurred following the election of Donald Trump as US President and the involvement of his administration in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where the Western Wall problems also fall, are discussed. Most of the text deals with the history of the past two centuries. During this period, the site underwent a number of changes and gained so many new connotations that their number could barely compete with some previous seasons.
