Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to study the connection between three concepts, namely mythopoeia, eucatastrophe and sehnsucht, which played an important role in the life, friendship and works of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, the main members of the literary group the Inklings. The first part of this thesis aims to present biographical background concerning the authors, in order to provide deeper comprehension of the further study. Furthermore, the thesis intends to frame the realization and inspiration of these concepts into the envirement of the Inklings, where the authors actively analyzed their works. The aim of this thesis is to indicate a relation between these concepts and demonstrate their double nature in the understanding and creative realization of the authors on both the literary and the spiritual level. The thesis also intends to study the ideological significance of these concepts and consequently prove their literary character in selected fictional works of the writers, especially in The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. This thesis intents to argue that the studied concepts are all related to each other and spring from a Christian belief, which Tolkien and Lewis shared and which influenced and connected them as friends and as writers of fantasy literature and of myths.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je studovat vztah mezi třemi konkrétními koncepcemi probíranými v prostředí Oxfordského klubu Inklings, které tvořili významnou úlohu jak v přátelství, v životě, tak i v tvorbě C. S. Lewise a J. R. R. Tolkiena jako hlavních přestavitelů tohoto klubu. Těmito koncepcemi jsou mythopoeia, eucatastrophe a sehnuscht. V první části se práce snaží poskytnout pozadí ze života autorů potřebné k lepšímu porozumění následného zkoumání daných koncepcí. Práce se dále snaží zasadit inspiraci a realizaci těchto koncepcí do prostředí klubu Inklings, v kterém tito autoři aktivně rozebírali svojí tvorbu. Práce se snaží poukázat na spojitost mezi těmito koncepcemi a jejich dvojitou podstatou v porozumění a kreativní tvorbě Lewise a Tolkiena na literární a duchovní úrovni. Záměrem práce je studovat ideologickou podstatu těchto koncepcí v porozumění Lewisa a Tolkiena a následně se práce snaží dokázat literární charakter těchto koncepcí ve fikční tvorbě Lewise a Tolkiena, především v Pánovi prstenů, Silmarillione a Kronikách Narnie. Cílem této analýzy je poukázat na spojitost mezi danými koncepcemi jako důsledku křesťanské víry, kterou tito spisovatelé sdíleli a která ovlivnila jejich přístup k tvorbě příběhů a především mýtů
