Abstract:

S ohledem na stále rostoucí význam digitalizace pro zajištění budoucího úspěchu podniku v kombinaci se zaostávající poptávkou po digitalizaci v Německu a jeho zpracovatelském průmyslu je hlavním cílem této práce prokázat souvislost mezi digitální vyspělostí a finanční a nefinanční výkonností podniku ve zpracovatelském průmyslu. Je navržen alternativní přístup k měření výkonnosti zahrnující finanční i nefinanční ukazatele, který umožní komplexnější pohled na celkovou obchodní výkonnost výrobní společnosti. Zkoumá se, zda společnosti s vyšší úrovní digitální vyspělosti dosahují lepších výsledků než společnosti s opožděnou digitalizací, a zda tedy úsilí o digitalizaci má pozitivní dopad na celkovou výkonnost podnikání ve zpracovatelském průmyslu. Kromě toho tato práce rozšiřuje současné teoretické poznatky tím, že vrhá více světla na vliv odvětvových certifikací na digitální vyspělost a na rozdíly v digitální vyspělosti v závislosti na stáří podniku. Aby se při hodnocení digitální zralosti zohlednila úzká vazba mezi řízením podnikových procesů a digitální transformací, jsou stávající modely digitální zralosti rozšířeny o integraci důraznějšího procesního pohledu. Na základě komplexního přehledu literatury je analyzován současný stav v oblasti digitální transformace a hodnocení digitální zralosti ve zpracovatelském průmyslu a je navržen procesně orientovaný přístup k měření digitální zralosti. Na základě analýzy ekonomické teorie, aktuálních výzkumných studií a osvědčených postupů ve zpracovatelském průmyslu je vybrán odpovídající soubor ukazatelů výkonnosti pro hodnocení celkové obchodní výkonnosti zpracovatelských podniků. Navržená metodika měření dopadu digitální transformace na výkonnost podniku je validována. V praxi bude vhodnost a použitelnost metodiky záviset na dostupnosti relevantních dat. Metodika je následně použita ke sběru aktuálních dat pro provedení kvantitativního výzkumu ve zpracovatelském průmyslu. Ke zkoumání dopadu digitální transformace na celkovou výkonnost podniku a k analýze potenciálních faktorů ovlivňujících digitální vyspělost podniku jsou použity různé statistické metody. Výsledky naznačují významný pozitivní vztah mezi digitální vyspělostí a výkonností podniku, což znamená, že podniky s vyšší úrovní digitální vyspělosti dosahují lepších výsledků než podniky, které jsou méně digitálně rozvinuté. Kromě toho byly zjištěny významné rozdíly v digitální vyspělosti mezi certifikovanými a necertifikovanými společnostmi, přičemž společnosti s certifikací vykazují vyšší úroveň digitální vyspělosti. Bylo také zjištěno, že oborové certifikace mají negativní moderující účinek oslabující vliv digitální vyspělosti na výkonnost podniku. Výsledky dále naznačují, že stáří společnosti ovlivňuje její digitální vyspělost, neboť byly zjištěny významné rozdíly v závislosti na letech založení společností. Zjištění této práce přispívají k dosavadním teoretickým poznatkům v oblasti digitální transformace a hodnocení digitální zralosti ve zpracovatelském průmyslu. Kromě toho výsledky výzkumu poskytnou výrobním podnikům důvody pro podporu digitální transformace, doporučení na úrovni procesů, jak postupovat při jejich digitální transformaci, a referenční úroveň pro německý výrobní průmysl.

Abstract:

In view of the increasing value afforded to digitalisation in enabling companies to succeed in future years, coupled with the need for Germany and its manufacturing industry to catch up digitally, the main objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the link between the digital maturity and the financial and non-financial business performance of manufacturing companies. An alternative approach to performance measurement is proposed, incorporating both financial and non-financial indicators, to enable a more holistic perspective on a manufacturing company’s overall business performance. It is investigated whether companies with a higher digital maturity level perform better than digital latecomers and, thus, whether digitalisation efforts have a positive impact on the overall business performance in the manufacturing industry. In addition, this thesis extends current theoretical knowledge by shedding more light on the effects of industry certifications on digital maturity and differences in digital maturity depending on company age. To reflect the close link between digital transformation and business process management in the digital maturity assessment, existing digital maturity models are extended by integrating a higher degree of process orientation. On the basis of a comprehensive literature review, the current state of research with regard to digital transformation and the assessment of digital maturity in the manufacturing sector is identified and a more process-oriented approach for assessing digital maturity is proposed. Following an in-depth analysis of existing research studies, relevant economic theory, and best practices in manufacturing, an appropriate set of performance indicators is selected, enabling the measurement of a manufacturing company’s business performance. The proposed methodology for assessing the impact of digital transformation on business performance is validated. In practice, the suitability and applicability of the methodology will depend on the availability of reasonable data. The subsequent application of this methodology serves to collect current data for conducting quantitative research in the manufacturing industry. Various statistical methods are employed to investigate the impact of digital transformation on the overall business performance and analyse potential factors influencing a company’s digital maturity. The results indicate a significant positive relationship between digital maturity and business performance, implying that more digitally developed companies perform better than companies exhibiting lower levels of digital maturity. Moreover, significant differences in digital maturity are identified between certified and non-certified companies, while companies with certifications achieve higher digital maturity levels. It is also found that industry certifications have a negative moderating effect weakening the effect of digital maturity on business performance. The results further indicate that the age of a company influences its digital maturity, as significant differences depending on the founding years of companies are found. The findings of this thesis contribute to existing theoretical knowledge in the domain of digital transformation and digital maturity assessment in the manufacturing industry. In addition, the research results will furnish manufacturing companies with reasons to advance their digital transformation, process-level recommendations on how to continue on their digital journey, and a valuable point of reference for the German manufacturing industry.
