Jewish Self-Identification in Chaim Potok's The Chosen

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the self-identification of the Jews in New York during the WWII in the novel "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok. In the novel, Potok makes a bridge between the strict, orthodox world and the secular world. I focus on the topic of Jewish assimilation in America in this time and also on the topic of family psychology and friendships. Due to lower assimilation tendency than among other immigrant groups, I strive to find key reasons which might impede the full assimilation. I also focus on the main protagonists of the novel, who, despite many difficulties, dilemmas and a great chasm between them, are able to sustain strong friendships and good family relations. This thesis is looked upon from the sociological, literary and psychological point of view.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na židovské sebeurčení v románu Chaima Potoka "Vyvolení" ve 40. letech 20. stol. v New Yorku - Brooklynu. Potok zde vytváří most mezi striktním ortodoxním a sekulárním světem. V práci se zabývám jak tématem asimilace Židů v Americe v této době, tak tématy rodinné psychologie a přátelských vztahů. Vzhledem k nižší míře asimilace než je u jiných přistěhovaleckých skupin, se snažím nacházet klíčové důvody, které plné asimilaci brání. Věnuji se také hlavním postavám románu, které i přes mnohé těžkosti, dilemata a názorové propasti, jsou schopny udržet si silná přátelství a dobré rodinné vztahy. Na tuto problematiku bylo nahlíženo metodologií sociologie, literárních studií a ve velké míře také psychologie.
